*calls out to the hired help*

Can we get a console shot here please?

    No?

It's okay, Roo, we'll edit it in in Post Production ;)

How are the last two posts on topic or relevant? I feel like I'm not a part of the conversation. :(

In the past, people here have sent me PMs containing links to other sites. As I understand the new rule, they would now be banned for that.

In the past mods here have said that PMs are private. Is that no longer true?

It's okay, Rhonda. It's just the names that change.

PMs ARE private. What the 'spam' issue is related to is the use of posts, threads and PMs to advertise other sites or services. If a friend (eg: someone you know or someone who you have had more than a cursory contact with in the past) PMs you with a link saying 'Hey, check this out!' and it doesn't offend you, then that is fine.

It's only when a stranger, or a user you've never spoken to before sends you a PM with an advertisement for another site or some kind of service, or porn or anything offensive that you should contact a moderator and tell them about it.

Continue to PM your friends and aquaintences every single moment you can if that's your thing.

    As a rule of thumb:

Negetive PMs or posts (anything that you find offensive) = reportable

Anything annoying = deal with it like an adult (IE: ignore it and it will go away)

EDIT: Also ASO? THAT WILL NEVAR HAPPEN!!1!!!eleven!

Someone's already done it LOL. They made Alderaan shoot first, and the console shoot first and many many others ;)

It always been the case that we don't allow unsolicited advertising on our forums. Either in posts or PM's. There is no new policy being announced here, just a re-affirming of what the old policy has always been.

One example is that I wouldn't for be able to walk into Tesco, and start handing out advertising material for Asda. If I did and I got caught be Tesco's management, I would be removed from the premise's. ;)

Literally every themed MSU makes a joke about the "problem users were discussed" section and there have been suggestions that problem users were killed, maimed, tortured, mocked, eaten by cannibals, eaten by animals and possibly even subjected to Celine Dion.

    Celine Dion!? [face_worried] :_|

Just to reiterate about spam PM's.... You aren't going to get banned for sending normal everyday PM's to people. This mass soiliciting type of PM rule is not new. In fact, it's one of the earliest. We're talking about spamvertisers and people sending out PM's to anyone and everyone about some great deal, some website offering something, that type of stuff. Way different than telling your friends in a PM about something on another website.

I've gotten PMs containing links from people I don't know, but I never thought those were anything to report. None of the sites offended me, but they didn't interest me either.

The mods tell us to go to one of them, and not our friend(s) when we have a disagreement with our friend(s) at the boards. I've never understood the logic of that. IMO, the mods should not mod our relationships.

C_W, I'll say it plainly: Most of us see this one way, and you see it another. You might want to take a look at how you perceive things, because it isn't particularly reliable.

    What do you mean?

FYI, I am not only one who sees it the way I do.

If it doesn't offend you, or you don't care, then don't do anything about it. If it does offend you, or you think the person might be a spambot and that bothers you, then tell a mod.
This rule was created (a million years ago) to deal with spamvertisers and people creating offshoot boards that are spamming PMs (sending them to people without any discretion at all). This is not difficult. It is not complicated.

I've never heard of this ever before.

If she's talking about having a disagreement or a spat with someone in a thread, well the general rule of thumb is either take it to PM (and keep it within the TOS) or talk to a mod to take care of the situation in thread. We don't moderate relationships and we never have.

Is it even necessary to say that problem users were discussed? That's kind of a given, isn't it? That line included in every single MSU doesn't update us on anything at all. :p

It's tradition. In the past there were updates without that and some users freaked out... ;)

I wholeheartedly agree with this comment (and I mean that in general, not just in relation to this week).

I must admit I find myself wondering why the autism joke is still there if we all agree that it's inappropriate, but meh. Sorry if I'm not allowed to mention that by virtue of not having gotten here earlier.

Yeah, I mean if we're not allowed to call other users "retarded" I don't see how it's okay to call problems users "autistic" ... I mean most of the time when a person calls somebody "retarded" it's in jest, so why is one okay and the other not?
