The impression I got from the History of Middle-Earth was that Tolkien was all over the map with the orcs, but the most likely result was that the orcs had two sources: (1) The regular orcs were humans, corrupted at the very beginning and (2) 'orcs' that were lesser Maiar.

Elves though, not humans, right? On their way west from that place of awakening. I'll have to dig out those books one of these days, I remember researching that for a fanfic long ago :p

Tolkien had multiple origins for orcs depending on how he was feeling. Basically, he ran into the wall of his own Catholicism that orcs were a race that was irredeemable and that was against his own faith. So he vacillated between the idea they were and weren't.

    1. Orcs were minor demons in physical bodies created by Morgoth.
    2. Orcs were corrupted elves.
    3. Orcs were "something else."

Urak-Hai were Orc/Human hybrids and thus smarter, stronger, and tougher.

LOTR and The Silmarillion emphasised "elves", Unfinished Tales first brought in "humans" (annotations to the section on Drúedain)

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drúedain

(the annotation mentioned that Drúedain and Orcs regard one another as renegades - and that there might be some relationship)

and History of Middle Earth introduced "lesser Maiar" for greater orcs, as well as discussing the other theories, for regular orcs.

And just in case we needed any further proof as to why Tom Hiddleston should play the young and/or clone Palpatine in a Star Wars movie at some point:

Now, I know what you're wondering:

"Uh, Ulicus ,how does this prove any such thing?"

    And you can keep wondering.

Huh. That's different. The nobles are quite cool. Sadly I don't collect these sorts of things because they're unpainted and I have no such talents myself.

I think the big problem, ultimately, was that it was fixed that Morgoth couldn't create, only corrupt - that the idea that the 'orcs' were a race that he made didn't work, unless they were 'fakes' - imitations that weren't truly alive; IIRC, he at one point thought about that.

The Silmarillon emphasizes elves but remember that's Christopher sorting his Dad's notes and choosing what to publish and not.

Personally, I prefer orcs as their own race.

I also think Modern Humanity is a Hobbit/Human/Orc mix.

Adventures with Star Wars ST Sims continues with the First Order and their super crappy simified Finalizer!
    ....it got ugly real fast.

To it's credit, Sims 3 is an improvement over the previous Sims games because you can make several evil characters in one household and they don't immediately kill one another or force someone to move out. In fact, evil characters *tend* to gravitate to one another and "bully" and "plot" together... which Kylo learned to his um... perpetual grief:

    The Finalizer:

Hux and Phasma's rooms. Hux has the podium, Phasma has the skeleton. I think I'll name it Brendol.

Kylo has a seat in his room. To contemplate Millicent's litter box.

The family dynamics are pretty messed up because I let them go on their own with minimal interference. Phasma and Hux have a plot going on involving nuclear something and jewelry:

Hux is a sexist loony and keeps ordering Phasma to (ironically) take out the trash:

After the second day Kylo started sleeping late and Hux began fiddling with stuff in his room, which led to... problems... weird... problems...

    ??????????

    ???????????????

...and the inevitable abuse (Kylo chased Hux into Phasma's room to perform the punishment for some reason...)

The only one everyone seems to like is Millicent:

I've got one more day with this computer, so in that time Rey and the Finalizer Family will have to meet. Phasma and Hux will probably have killed Kylo by then.

The new Black Mirror season was I think their strongest yet, but I thought that it was surprising how much love the "Hang the DJ" episode got. Not that I think it was bad, but I feel like it was on the lower end of this season, and also far below the similar-feeling Nosedive from last season.

Star Trek parody was still my favorite of this season by far.

That is such a beautiful explosion. I hope one day there is the equivalent of Rogue One for TFA that can give us the necessary attachment to SKB as a threat to make it more emotionally satisfying...

Going back a few days to quote this post, but it reminded me, I got my girlfriend a stuffed porg for Christmas. She was extremely pleased, but as of Saturday, she had not thought up a name for it yet. So she texted me and asked me to come up with a name for it. :p

Anyway, between the two of us, it is now Piper Lei the Porg.
