ST Monsters / Creatures in the ST

The OT pretty much tells you that humans are the dominant species, at least in ruling the Galaxy. There shouldn't be any less of them than what we've seen in the last films. However, when it comes to aliens, there should always be that image that they're the inferior species when compared to humans. It's one of the things that made the OT, and I'm sure JJ will try to emulate that again.

So looking back at that old concept art description, I must say some it did make it into the photo we just got in VF. Sure not everyone in Roses Room is represented in the image, but the guy with the blue trench coat sounds like the second design MSW outlined a bit. The guy next to him actually has goggles on his forehead like "Montross."

But the thing also is that nothing seems new new. It's old stuff with a new name or a fancy recoloring. The thought process behind the film was to go back to the originals, but someone must've said that it can't all be just nostalgia, so what we end up with is "new" stuff that's a carbon copy of the old.

 

There's actually a mention of him in the Art of ANH book. I can't remember which one he's supposed to be. For some reason I want to say it's next to the fly-headed alien sketch, but did that guy ever get made?

 

i hope we get some epic new aliens. i;m sure we will.

 

If they were to give the red-clad alien an OT name, I'd say Mantahead would be appropriate, since we've had Hammerhead and Squidhead. Speaking of Squidhead, for a moment or two, I thought Mantahead might be a Quarren wearing a mask, but the wings of the mask are too thin to contain the cheeks, and the chin seems too short to contain a Quarren's barbels.

In the new "canon" blu ray Obi Wan "scream" i dont think its even meant to be a Krayt Dragon anymore. Theres some kind of Desert Spirit that the Sand People fear and i think that maybe thats what Obi-Wan was going for here now.

 

I hope he's just sitting in his chair getting a lap dance from that female character sitting almost right on him hahaha. She looks so small compared to him it would be funny. Her garb is interesting, almost like a court jester's outfit with the triangular pieces coming down from her leather cowl.

 

I doubt he'd be called Mantahead, because that's a helmet, not his head. He could just be a plain ol' human with a preference for wacky helmets and the color red.

Well, that is to say, not the original theatrical version. The first one is Special Edition, second one is Blu-Ray. The Blu-Ray one is pretty dumb...I'm fairly certain it's audio pulled from this clip and altered:

 

So it's said the red dude is a body guard to another character and he has striped makeup below the mask which hints at him taking his mask off. The fact he also sticks out like a sore thumb makes me wonder if he'll be featured? Perhaps he's the character who confronts Rey and Chewie and gets his arm dislocated (his arm is hanging kinda funny in that pic) Maybe this is Simon Pegg?

I've actually been quite happy with the creatures themselves. Some very original designs. A creature that speaks in stereo? A bigfoot looking intelligent being? Lizards that are bipedal? All quite cool. The thing I hope they DON'T do is go unoriginal on the name by using an earth name for the creature. A "Coruscanti Squirrel" or a "Hoth Fox" for instance.
