Once and a while, one will come across a film that, by all rights (asinine concept, mediocre predecessors), ought to be abysmal, yet defied expectations. Any contenders?

My first pick: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)

It shouldn't work, but miraculously does. The tone vacillates nicely between grit and goofiness, the direction competent, and the performances affecting.

    Nothing.

It's not a great movie, but it's passable, which is more than you would expect from the title.

Honestly, you can probably guess what my favorite line of The Rocketeer is (possibly the most jingoistic one in there!), but when I found out Joe Johnston was making the Captain America movie and they were making a period WW2 piece of out of it, this could reasonably be a facsimile of myself:

Clue. Somehow adapting a murder mystery board game into a comedy film worked out tremendously.

Seconded. Disney adapts a theme park ride into a film and Johnny Depp almost wins an Oscar in the process.

"Flash Gordon," early 80's version. The Queen soundtrack alone was glorious.

Ghostbusters (2016) for all the **** it got from the misogynistic press and alt-right, it was not only good - but better than the original.

If it wasn't that great, it was mostly due to the male performances. Bill Murray's performance was close to his all time worst. Neil Casey was terrible, but no one was worse than Chris Hemsworth.

I haven’t seen 2016 Ghostbusters, but its getting **** from the misogynists and alt-right, make it better regardless of how terrible it is.

My pick for this thread is Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

A nine-year-old kid orders a penthouse, about 27653856 scoops of ice cream from room service, makes the hotel staff recite lines from a bad movie, and takes directions from Donald Trump (who happened to be in his best role on or off screen), and it’s still incredibly enjoyable to watch.

    Highlander.

The first one, obviously. There can be only one good Highlander movie.

    Speed Racer (1998)

I get why it got a lot of flak. It was the Wachowski's first project post-Matrix, and was super cheesy and ridiculous. But the Wachowski's absolutely NAILED the execution.
