My dad was hip to Walter Carlos. I don't know if he ever knew that Walter had become Wendy even before releasing these albums.

Music I used to hear at my parents parties when I was young: Judy Collins, Steeleye Span, Barry Manilow

As I got older car journeys were dominated by music we all liked: Queen's Greatest Hits vol 1, soft rock compilation American Heartbeat, Dire Straits Greatest Hits, Fleetwood Mac Greatest Hits

My father used to spend a lot of time recording the top 20 at the weekends back in the 70s and early 80s; he mainly listened to classical music as he got older.

SuperWatto, I've never heard Switched on Bach II. Dad had the first one, and The Well-Tempered Synthesizer, which had an awesome arrangement of Monteverdi.

As a kid I had a sort of musical awakening when I discovered my parents' record collection and listened to many of them a lot. The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, CCR, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, and others.

    I had a real mix.

Dad: Beatles, Stones, McCartney solo, Malcolm Mclaren, Alice Cooper, Kraftwork, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Neil Young, Ian Dury
Mum: Talking Heads, Van Morrison, Lou Reed, Elton John, James Taylor, The Moody Blues, Procol Harum, K.D Lang, Amy Whitehouse.

Then there was me: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Crowded House/Neil Finn, Oasis, R.E.M, Smashing Pumpkins, Tom Waits, Linkin Park, Weezer, Nick Cave, U2, Prince, Metallica, Radiohead, Tom Petty, Neil Young, ***d**ay, Joe Henry, Motorhead, Travis

I guess my parents music had some influence on me.

Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass were mainstays of my parents' stereo system. At Christmas time we got Andy Williams and Perry Como carol albums as well.

Dad listened to Stones, mom listened to the Beatles. It's pretty funny that my dad was the first of his friends to own a house, so he amassed a vast collection of albums that his friends left over (including three copies of the Doors' first album).

The big influence on my musical taste was my Grampa @};-, who was really into period pieces like this one.

One album that made its way to my collection after the parents bought it on release - our first CD, I believe - was this one:

There are others I remember - names forgotten like Laura Branigan; the metal covers to the Meatloaf albums, so much of Queen and Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam, the Doors, Moody Blues, Billy Joel, 1970s Elton John, etc. But Graceland is burned into my memory of childhood.
