Sakae, Nagoya-shi, Aichi-ken: Sakae is an area containing Central Park, TV Tower, Oasis 21, an underground shopping area, some musuems and many places to shop and eat. It is easy to get to. You can take the subway from Nagoya Station. There are several places that have English reading material like the Mana House and Maruzen(2nd Floor).

Aoyagi Samurai Residences, Kakunodate Town, Akita Prefecture

Great for history buffs, these authentic samurai houses have been converted into a museum, with tons of cool stuff to see, ranging from samurai weapons and armor, to old Victrola record players and more.

Also, Kakunodate has an amazing street lined with weeping cherry trees, that would be spectacular if you caught it during cherry blossom season.

Kumamoto Castle, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture.

Impressive castle, in a city layed out entirely for its defense. They even changed the path of the Shirakawa river to use it as a moat of sorts!

    Mt. Aso, Kumamoto Prefecture

World's largest active volcano caldera. A huge grass-covered mountain, with odd-angled peaks coming out at the weirdest angles. Totally alien-looking. There are tons of places to visit in the area- you could spend a few days doing them all. The Kuju Flower Gardens, Grandioso (home of taiko masters TAO), Cuddly Bear Dominion Zoo, Takamori Dengaku Village (Yummy!), and more. Plus, the crater- it's huge!
