    Unless your entire system got fried why would the loss of your CPU mean the loss of your data... It's your hard drive you have to worry about so your CPU might have gone kaput, but so long as the HD is still ok all your data should still be there.

    I hate my motherboard, it has chewed through 4 video cards in as many years.

    On a related note, the death of your CPU, though tragic in itself, should not lead to the concurrent demise of your data.
