I completed creating an R2-D2 model for my fanfilm a few months back, and thought I'd show it everyone here because I'm quite happy with it. Obviously the modelling took some time, as did the texturing. All textures were hand painted in Photoshop.

Any comments, questions or feedback is welcome.

I do like that model. I particularly like the feet. Something about them feels real. The rest of the model lacks depth slightly. I think the details could stand to be slightly more prominent. And if you are going for R2-D2, I think the blue is a shade too light.

But the model otherwise looks very cool. =D=

Nicely done! The feet are good IMO as well, and the only real suggestion I have is to add some detail to the dome. If you could make it look like those blue panels are separate from the rest of the dome it would add a lot to the overall model. :)

    Keep up the good work!

Many of your proportions are wrong, and your bumpmap is all out of whack.

I like your dirt texture, though.

The head needs some work... like his eye - that needs to be bigger. But I think the rest looks good.:)

Like I said in the other thread I think the texturing on the dome could use a little work.

Erm, it doesn't have a bump map, so what the heck are you on about?

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

All the parts seem to be there, but GuanoLad is right about proportions, some parts should be bigger and others smaller

I thought the panels were created by a bumpmap that wasn't lined up properly. It looks like they are. Sorry for my assumption if they're not. They are, nevertheless, out of alignment.

The bottom half looks pretty good, but the dome could definitely use some work. It should be shiny and metallic; not the gray plastic feel that the rest of the droid has.

Is a good reference site too.

I too have been contemplating using a diff. colored R2 for my film.

When I went to Astromech.net I saw this picture and loved it:
    [image=http://www.solid-roc.com/R2D2Blue.jpg]

So I went ahead and Retextured an existing R2 from Sci-fi
using the textures from the R2 Head on the new Jedi Fighter

Can a biped be attached to Artoo?

    A biped? LOL
You can attach anything you want to a biped, but I really don't know why you want to do that. R2 doesn't need a biped

I have a question, How do you set up his head so that when you rotate it (when his body is tilted backwards), it doesnt go all funky.... its hard to explain but I know someone will know what im talking about.

Rory >> It's the same, biped or bones are only usefull for organic models, with parts that need to be deformed. For artoo, it's only made of separated moving parts. All you have to do is to create groups of moving parts, set the pivots of these groups, and then link them to each others with the link tool. I think it's enought, something like artoo doesn't need IK settings (an AT-AT could use some, and it wouldn't requier bones anyway : no deformable part).

And then to answer Brandeni at the same time, I think I see what you mean: when you rotate parts of your artoo, set the axis to "local", defaut is "view" or "world".
