Yeah, this changes things on my end. "I want to be single so that I can find myself" is quite different from, "I ****ed somebody else." I now kind of want to thump you on the head for going on vacation with her.

I sort of stopped feeling sorry for you as soon as you said she was 20. Now don't go proposing again until you've stopped being a dumb kid (which, hopefully, will occur at some point in your 30s), and prepare yourself for the even worse break-ups you'll experience in the next decade. Cheers!

Some guy drank himself to death while watching the new Twilight movie here in New Zealand. Took the soft option, I think.

Why are the 30s so much better an age to get engaged? So that by the time he has kids he'll look like a grandpa?

Also, so that you have some life experience and knowledge, so that you don't have to turn to a message board for assistance for everything from small purchases, to planning a princess wedding, and finding a good divorce lawyer.

Disney weddings in your 30s are kind of creepy, though. I see Valyn's POV.

I don't want a Disney wedding. I just want a ceremony where a man hands his property (daughter) over to me. Esmerelda can be the Gypsy entertainment or something.

In case you couldn't tell, harpuah, that was sarcasm. Hopefully it was dry.

    Foot, meet mouth.

And touche everyone, with the exception of Lexu.

Experts swear that couples have the best odds of making it to the long haul if they wait until 25...

    and..

those who marry in the early to mid-20s are slightly happier and less likely to break up than those who marry in the later 20s, but are significantly more satisfied with their relationships than those who marry at 30 or older.

There are many more sources emphasizing that the mid-20s are the best target age for a full-committed relationship (engagement, marriage, what have you). Those were just the top two in the search list.

As for myself turning to the JCC for "every small purchase and decision," I don't think that's much different than consulting Amazon/cnet/yahoo, etc reviews. Many of you do this, but enough about me treating the JCC like Amazon.com.

Back to the point of this thread and my initial remark. Lexu's comment just rubbed me the wrong way (as Lexu is wont to do). She's unsympathetic because this guy didn't wait until he was 30 or older? Because in her expert opinion, anyone younger than 30 just isn't capable of a committed relationship? Well, the Internet is full of contradicting information. And the world.

IMO, all you really need is financial independence and reliability (in addition to the obvious: loyalty, honesty, love, etc, etc).

Maybe Lexu was just exercising typical JCC thorniness to a wounded person ("I'm on a distant computer, so your pain is tonight's entertainment!"). But either way, this JCer had something tragic happen to him. And age shouldn't matter there. Women cheat on their husbands and partners even after they're 30. Heck, one such case is all over the news right now (the Petreus scandal).

Just because someone's 30 or older doesn't suddenly make them a better person than someone 29 or younger.

    A few (semi-) serious points:

    1. My daughters were born when I was 37 and 39. I often wish I had been a bit younger, and had a little more energy. My wife and I have decided to stop at 2, would almost certainly have gone for a third if we were younger.

    2. On the other hand, I look back at my own experience in college, where I had a pretty serious girl-friend for a good chunk of sophomore and junior years. Had we atyed together, we probably would have gotten married within a year or two of graduation. Alto of my friends got married to their college girlfriends. All are still together, and have had wonderful lives. That wasn't for me -- I probably would have had a happy life if I had stayed together with that girlfriend (she married the guy she dated after me, they have three beautiful kids, the eldest of whom is now at our alma mater, Notre Dame), but I was no where near ready for that. I ended up going to business and law school, took a long time to figure ot what I wanted to be when I grew up (whenever that finally happens :p). If we would have stayed together, I wouldn't have had that opportunity. Maybe things would have worked out anyway, but maybe not.

    3. I also know quite a few people who committed to relationships early (a cousin with whom I'm very close foremost among them) and, well, they're happy, but I know they look back and realize that they committed too soon. It's not really even about the other person in most of those cases, it's just that they look back and see how many opportunities they've had to pass on as a result.

In the end, you're the only person who really knows if you're ready. Maybe you are. But if she's only 20, I really doubt she is.

Btw I'm not arguing anything but the notion that 30 = magically ready

Edit: I've also had to pass up on opportunities, especially career wise, but I'm doing ok.
