Nagging Question:Nazis in Egypt?!

The world was not at war in '36.
There's no reason that the Egyptian government would not allow a German expedition into the desert.

The treaty isn't relevant. Germany was allowed to maintain a small defensive force under the treaty, and the expidition force doesn't violate that in any way.

They don't now, no.
I have no idea what they "allowed" in '36.

A millitary expedition would seem to be armed by their nature. But, I don't recall a wall of Panzers anywhere, no artillery, no pillboxes.
It was a unit of men, some trucks, and a wierd cargo plane.

You presume the Germans told the truth about the nature of their mission, and even if they did, there *was* an air base. Material could have been flown in.

The germans also did not have MP38 and MP40 SMGs in 1936 either.

 

This idea is a loose depiction of the Nazi's interest in the occult/ancients. Perhaps it didn't happen exactly in this way (Egypt) but there are a lot of stories concerning the nazi expeditionary trips across the world (Tibet, Greece).

 

The Brits were realy freindly right up until the war started. Plus the Egyptians didn't like the British at all and would have gladly helped the Nazis.

 

This is crazy. Inaccuracies aside, of course it is technically possible for armed Germans to occupy a remote part of Egypt. Maybe the Nazis got permission from the Brits (likely, because before the war, the Brits had a decidedly laissez faire attitude against the Nazis, because of protests in Great Britain). Maybe the Nazis had the equivalent of Trojan Horse, and smuggled weapons in.

Regardless, in 1936, the Nazi Party was the standing political power in a legitimate nation - a nation that every other country in the civilized world thought had to be operating legitimately, because of the Treaty of Versailles and the results of WWI.

And, in response to the person who argued that it wasn't regular US troops that invaded Cambodia, but special ops... that argument is semantics. Maybe the Nazis in Raiders were Nazi special ops. Come on, man! You can do better than that!

 

Historical accuracy is of the upmost importance in a film that deals with the Ark of the Covenant and spirits that fly out of it to melt people.
