That means good conditions for conservation for later archaeology, Jab.

True. My mummified remains could make it to the year 3,000 or beyond.

Interesting to think about the possibility of corn and soybean yields dropping in Illinois by 25-50% between 2050 and 2100.

    Ooh goldmine!

You know what's interesting? These articles used to go "it will be this bad in 20 years... if we don't act now". But lately that last part has gone missing.

It's all about adaptation now. Get your stillsuit ready. The time has almost come for drinking your own recycled urine.

Almost? Expanding market, waste recycling. Get in while there's still room. You'll even get subsidized.

I think I found your song. "Another Way To Die" by Disturbed, from... Chicago, Illinois.

Your list is suspect. Prince's 1999 is an apocalyptic song?

I'm actually counting on drastic climate change. Have invested heavily in globe and map manufacturing companies. When the sea levels rise I'll be rich as every school in the world will need to buy new globes and wall maps.

Your strategy would make sense if there were still going to be any public schools.

    GenAntilles, one word: smartboards.

I got the 1999 12" back in the day. 1983? It ended with a chant of "Mommy, why does everybody have a bomb?". It was abundantly clear to me from day 1.

The Earth is indeed flat* if you're going fast enough and the Earth does not orbit the Sun.

Those statements are absolutely true, but the point being that science is so immeasurably complicated that simple platitudes (i.e. man made global warming is real/fake/whatever) often have far, far more complicated explanations, caveats, etc...

*By "flat" I don't mean to the point of being 2-dimensional. There will still be some arbitrary width about it.

    But it has more complicated!

Meanwhile, I'm finding out that nearly all apocalyptic music is metal, and nearly all metal is apocalyptic: how boring.

Thank you for proving my point. Statements like the ones I made may seem dumb to the ignorant masses, but that doesn't mean they aren't true.

Tell ya what. You tell me what I said was wrong, and I'll explain to you why it's right. (However, whether or not you understand my explanation is not something I can guarantee).

While you're trying to explain it to everyone, GeneralAntilles will be making a fortune buying up property along his redrawn oceanfront.

How about if he is wrong you just explain it in a way he can understand?

The basics of anthropogenic climate change actually aren't terribly complicated. Compounds such as carbon dioxide and methane trap the sun's heat in the atmosphere, so they're called "greenhouse gases." By burning organic matter that has been buried for hundreds of millions of years beneath the surface-- fossil fuels-- human activity is releasing more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than would naturally occur. Thus, over time, the average global temperature will increase.

That took me three sentences. It's not hard to understand. The exact effects are difficult to pin down, but it's safe to say that it wouldn't be good for life not adapted to a warmer climate, including humans.

    Yeah, I know...

The problem with "easy to understand" is that it often is synonymous with "mind-blowingly incomplete." A second grader's science book is easy to understand, but I sure am glad my learning didn't end there. Otherwise I might still think the Earth orbited the Sun.
