Qui-Gon's defiance I sense in you. Need that, you do not. Master Yoda had frowned as he spoke.

It was well for me, he couldn?t hear the mirthless laugh I kept buried deep inside. I?d heard many accusations in my years as a padawan; some of them sadly true. But to say I had Qui-Gon?s defiance? It was ridiculous. My master and I had disagreed too often over that very thing.

Yet now, as I sit in this empty room, I think of him, and I cannot bow to Yoda in this.

My master had defiance, but only in what mattered. He defied corrupt officials. He defied hate-filled warmongers. He defied Sith lords. And yes, he defied the Council; more often than I was comfortable with.

But his ?defiance? came from his deep-seated awareness of the Force. At the leading of the Force, he would defy even himself. If that is defiance, then I would willingly take a thousand frowns from Yoda, to have it.

No, Master Yoda, I think. Need that, I do.

I enjoyed this peek into Obi-Wan's mind. There is a purposeful tone, ending with a whimsical retort to Yoda's judgment.

I very much enjoyed Obi-Wan's thoughtful recounting of how and why Qui-Gon was sometimes defiant.
