Orci in Talks to Direct Trek (1)3

He's pushed hard to get it, but the effort has paid off - Roberto Orci has emerged as the clear front runner and is in talks to direct the third installment in the rebooted "Star Trek" film series.

Orci, who co-wrote and produced the first two films with longtime partner Alex Kurtzman, is taking over for J.J. Abrams who helmed the first two films. Abrams commitments to the "Star Wars" franchise prevent him from returning.

Kurtzman meanwhile is turning his attention towards Sony and its "Spider-Man" franchise properties. That leaves longtime Trek fan Orci now essentially in charge of where the franchise will go.

Skydance Productions was reportedly behind Orci's hiring to helm the film, but they had to convince Paramount. Now it appears they have and with his hiring, the project is expected to move forward fast and may make its rumored 2016 release date after all.

Orci, Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne are working on the script for the third film. It's been speculated this entry could be a "course correction" for the franchise, steering it back towards the dramatic roots that it built its name on.

How about "optimistic," "socially relevant," and "not mind-numbingly stupid"? I'd put those as its "roots" before "dramatic."

Oh God, never thought I'd be saying this, but let's give Trek back to Berman before Robert Orci. Paging Nick Meyer- Trek is ****ed up again, save us.

Berman was able to run the franchise okay in terms of quality. Seasons 3-7 of TNG and all of DS9 were under his tenure. He just needed someone like Michael Piller or Ira Steven Behr to run the shows; Brannon Braga wasn't up to the task.

Yeah, my question was rhetorical. :p So Paramount is officially announcing their utter indifference to the franchise by handing over it's next installment to an untested, creatively-challenged director. Awesome.

Well, so much for hoping that the odd numbered Trek's this time around would be the good ones...

They don't see it as a problem since two films did well and however it was that the execs were convinced to give it to him.
