Oh, I get what Decker gets out of it- it's still ridiculously disrespectful to Illia and her memory.

There's one big problem with cutting the opening scene with the Klingons: it's tied with the Enterprise reveal as the best sequence in the movie.

As for the movie itself, the big problem I have is that there's little real humanity in it. One of the great things about "Wrath of Khan" was that they seemed a lot more like actual people, and weren't so stern all the time. Especially Kirk; in TMP, Shatner seems to be not so much playing Kirk as doing a stereotypical Shatner impression, especially during the Star Fleet HQ scene with Sonak. In TWOK, though, he's more relaxed and delivers a fine performance.

I tend to go along with those who feel that TMP is closer to "2001" than "Star Trek". It's not a bad movie, just slow and kind of cold.

And, should Rifftrax ever do TMP, I can just hear them saying how "V'Ger Flyover" has become the new "rock climbing".

Agreed- I'm reluctant to even trim it for that reason (especially since the Directors Cut already trimmed it down a bit)- plus introducing the modern, "post-augment virus", Klingon design is the second most notable thing about the film, after the introduction of the new Enterprise.

Huh. I don't know why the thought of using the holodeck to bring Kirk and Picard together never occurred to me. That's much better than the Nexus.

Ugh, they wanted to "These Are the Voyages..." Kirk.

They actually did it, eventually, in Ship of the Line. While on Cardassia Prime, Picard runs holodeck simulation that includes an ultra-advanced hologram of Captain Kirk.

That wouldn't mitigate the financial risk, really. Plus it's probably fairly safe to say RDM is pretty much done with Star Trek. I just read an article recently where he talked about finally being able to watch it again after however many years it's been since DS9. Also, he just started Outlander.

The aliens trying to return to their home sounds a bit like "Lonely Among Us" and another episode which I'm trying to recall.

I'm hoping they use Sheldon's fan fiction as their source material.

I haven't watched much of "Voyager". But the one I'm thinking of is TNG.

Today's cool nugget: actual test footage by Foundation Imaging of the Voyager Aeroshuttle launch:

EDIT- I also read for the first time that one of the reasons the Aeroshuttle was never used was because Berman didn't want it to overshadow the Captain's Yahct launch sequence in Insurrection.

So, remarkably, Insurrection has managed to give me yet another reason to loathe that film. I'm as surprised as you are. I have to assume it's intentionally trolling me at this point. Using time travel. Or something. It's the only reasonable explanation.

So... why did they use footage of Kira and Bashir, instead of actual Voyager characters for the inside of the shuttle?

Because the Aeroshuttle was supposed to be based on the Runabout and reuse the Runabout cockpit set.

Apparently one of the FI guys did this test footage for free as a proof of concept pitch to Berman, so he likely reused DS9 footage for the cockpit as he couldn't have them film new footage.

A shame- launching out from underneath with the saucer overhead is actually a very cool visual.

And yet, they introduced the Delta Flyer in Season 5 in order to give Voyager a long range shuttlecraft.
