Yeah, to me this all sounds a bit like someone confusing the long-in-the-planning 3D conversion with the prospect of brand new Star Wars movies. I wouldn't put any money on the latter, but as late as this winter's Golden Globes Lucas himself said Avatar made it more likely that the Star Wars Saga is coming to 3D soon.

EDIT: The original report insists on new films, but I start doubting the credibility there when Spielberg and Coppola are mentioned as possible directors...

There will be a lot of changes to the original trilogy if they are changed into 3-D. The technology they used back then doesn't work with alot of the new stuff today, so the feel of those beautiful 80's cameras would cease to keep the classic Star Wars alive. However, I will be seeing the movies (if they do come out in 3-D) because any Star Wars is better than no Star Wars.

3d is a gimmick that I personally have zero interest in and am frankly against. The human eye was not meant to set watching things like that for 2 hrs, or all the time if a person has a 3D television. In fact, I may become an Eye Doctor because soon their will be a plague of eye problems due to the over use of 3D. People always take things to far, and they will do the same with 3D.

3D does not make a movie any better. You can take a pig and put make-up on it, but it will still be a pig.

Here's an interview at AWN with John Knoll about the plans for 3D conversion.

He also mentions ILM are not planning on adding any new shots to the films. It will just be a straight conversion project done by outside vendors.

Here is the interview: Knoll talks SW 3D

Thx to tf.net front page for the heads up.
