Hey besties, this weekend I rented a carpet cleaner and scrubbed the dinge out of my supposed-to-be-white carpet. I even got those spots in the corners of my bedroom where the cat likes to pee. Is this adulthood . . . ?

    I . . . I thought there'd be cake. :(

    Ah, Denny's at 4:30 am . . . because there's nowhere else to be at 4:30 am. :p

Today is my nephew's 21st birthday, and his mother ruined it for me by posting my favorite YouTube "happy birthday" video to FaceBook before I got the chance. So I posted this instead:

Now that you're 21, life will become an ever-accelerating blur of putrid intoxication, not unlike a vision of an oncoming train, which will fade slowly, too slowly, into the black night of madness. Happy birthday.

I better be his favorite uncle after this.

There is cake in adulthood, but you have to go buy it for yourself.

I got home last night from New York and I am feeling out of it today. That's a bit of a surprise, because when I got home from New York in June, I think I was fine. I put in a lot of mileage on both trips, but I guess this one took a bigger physical toll. Fortunately, I made certain I didn't work today, or the day before I left. Both seem to have been good calls.

Also very thankful to Dan and Beth for letting me stay with them again.

Me, my brother & a mutual friend of ours are in the preliminary stages of planning a trip in July to either Miami or NYC; I’d much prefer a New York trip... would be more for me to do there.

The heat in Florida is HORRIBLE in July. Okay, it's bad in NYC too, but it's not the madness-inducing Florida heat.

Went to the Whitney, the Met, David Zwirner, and another gallery. Saw some friends and made pictures when I could.

So besties, it snowed for 9 straight days in Chicagoland. There's more than a foot of snow on the ground. Tomorrow, it's supposed to get up into the 40s, for those of you living in the real world, that's 5 degrees above freezing. Also, it's supposed to rain. I'm no meteorologicist, but that seems like a lot of water aimed directly at my basement.

We would be good characters in a Roland Emmerich movie. I have to say: Of course the pumps will hold. They've never failed yet. Stop being an alarmist. You'll cause a panic!

Good morning. In less than an hour, clouds from here will join others clouds from around the world. And they will be creating the largest cumulonimbus in the history of mankind. Perhaps it's fate that today is Valentine's Day, and we will once again be fighting for the items we store from our loved ones in the lower parts of our house. We are fighting for our right to live in a waterless basement. To be dry. And should we remain dry, Valentine's Day will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: "We will not go soaked into the night!" We will not be drenched without a fight! We're going to sump pump on! We're going to stay dry! Today we celebrate our Valentine's Day!

Ah, the time of year when one is reminded of the gnawing loneliness by a commercialized holiday ostensibly celebrating a guy(s) who probably did not exist. Damn you, President's Day.

I hate Valentine's Day for the extremely pedantic reason that I can never tell if I'm infrequently frustrated by actual loneliness or if I only think I'm frustrated by loneliness because I've spent 30 years being bombarded with messages about how being alone is bad.
