ST New Droid - BB-8

I think I will pay someone to MAKE a BB for me. But that is pretty darn cool. I applaud folks with that kind of skill set.

 

I expect JJ to follow the traditions of Japanese monster movies and Power Rangers, and BB will Inflate to a massive size in the final battle and roll over the Stormtroopers, crushing them all.

(And then Kylo with wave his lightsabre about, making Ching Kaching! noises and also grow to massive size... But that's another story.)

All that concept art of BB-8's double secret hidden compartment for lightsabres was just a load of wasted time for the artists involved then?

Check out MSW's description of BB-8's super secret compartments. Obviously not needed for the movie, just a normal compartment.

 

that's like saying r2 doesn't need all his secret gadgets because he doesn't use them in the first film.

 

Not really though. R2 used his gadgets eventually, obviously the need for a super secret lightsabre hiding compartment has passed.

(takes a deep breath) - There was concept art of BB-8 that featured a series of false panels hiding a secret compartment used to store the lightsabre. Obviously the need for such secrecy must have been for another plotline. In TFA Poe merely puts the lightsabre in one of BB-8's ordinary storage compartments. Thus all those concept art pieces were never required in the first place.

 

why not? it's still a secret. you have no point. they designd bb for more than just that.

 

BB-8 is just an astromech droid. Normal astromech droids do not have special secret compartments designed specifically (see MSW's report) to house and conceal lightsabres. They obviously may well have storage compartments, one of which is used for the lightsabre. The concept art shows that there was obviously an alternate plot point that revolved around BB-8 being used to smuggle the lightsabre as part of a plan rather than a last ditch, off-the-cuff attempt by Poe to get it away from the F.O.

So according to MSW's synopsis, BB-8 flies with Poe during the final battle and ends up with Rey and Chewie on their way to find Luke. Does that mean BB-8 belongs to Rey now and Poe will need a new droid to fly with on missions? Important questions...

 

I'm just going to assume that Poe and BB-8's farewell will be along the lines of this

First the X-wing, then the jacket, and now BB-8. Poe just can't have nice things
