    Hey everyone,

I've always liked Star Wars but have never been the biggest reader, so until just recently when my friend gave me his copy of Shadows of the Empire, I've never read a Star Wars book. SOTE actually was an awesome book and now I have a huge interest to read more Star Wars books, Are there any suggestions of what order to generally read them in (chronlogical etc...). Thanks

I agree. Despite what others will tell you, the Thrawn Trilogy ( Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising and The Last Command ) are generally the best litmus test one can take, to see if they'll like to read more of the spin-off books.

    I also reccomend the following...

Old Republic Era ( 5000-1000 years before A New Hope )
    --
Tales of the Jedi comic trade paperbacks
    Jedi vs. Sith comic series

    Rise of the Empire Era
    --
Cloak of Deception by James Luceno
Darth Maul - Shadow Hunter by Michael Reeves
The Approaching Storm by Alan Dean Foster

Rebellion Era ( From shortly before A New Hope to Return of the Jedi )
    --
The Han Solo Adventures by Brian Daley
The Han Solo Trilogy by A.C. Crispin
Splinter of the Mind's Eye by Alan Dean Foster
Classic Star Wars comics by Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson

New Republic Era ( 0 to 20 years after Return of the Jedi )
    --
The Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn
X-wing series ( 9 books by Mike Stackpole and Aaron Allston )
Dark Empire comic series by Tom Veitch

If you're interested in the video and computer games, try...

    X-wing Trilogy
    Dark Forces
Dark Forces II - Jedi Knight
    Starfighter
    Rogue Leader

If you're interested in the roleplaying game, try the Star Wars Sourcebook or 2nd Edition rulebook from West End Games ( no longer in print, but can be bought used at shops and eBay.com ) or wait for the updated Core Rulebook by Wizards of the Coast, released this May.

Check out Star Wars Gamer magazine for the newest Expanded Universe info, and check the past news at StarWars.com for any information you want on the various spin-off products.

    ::shakes his head::

I think I picked up a stray sattelite signal from Skywalker Ranch for a minute there...

If you have enough time, read all the novels in chronolical order, if not, read The Thrawn Trilogy, the Jedi Academy Trilogy, the Hand of Thrwan Duology and the NJO ...

    maybe more

    better everything ;) :)

Like some said, if you can, read everything. It's not all good, but you'll get a much more complete understanding of the GFFA as it pertains to the EU.

    I would recommend reading:
    The Thrawn Trilogy
    the X-Wing series
    I, Jedi
    the Jedi Academy Trilogy
    Dark Empire, Dark Empire 2
the whole Tales of the Jedi graphic novel series
    and the NJO.

I suggest starting with Thrawn because it gives a good introduction to the EU in general. Dark Empire is another good one to begin with.

Chim... we VIPs are always right :D

It hurt when I head to let out the X-Wing Series in my SHORT list up there
    X-Wing is really really good!

    Don't you agree, Chimeal ;) ?

If by chronologically people mean publication date, then fine.

But be wary of reading Bantam in anything other than publication date. The reason is the books tended to build on each other as they went along, dropping refs that went both forward and backwards in time. The easiest way to comprehend it is to read the books in publication order.

Once done you can rearrange them into a strict chronologic order if you like but that removes the surprises for the most part that the other order gives you.

As for NJO: The problem does not arise, so just read them in order. (Bk 1, 2, 3 etctereas.)

    Yeah, VIP-ship is fun :D
    Good Luck

On-Topic: Thinking about it, the order doesn't really matter that much. I read them in an absolutely chaotic order and understood almost everything

Well like others have said its best to read the books based on when they were published. One book would be based say 15 years after A New Hope but then a year later a book based 8 years after A New Hope would be published. It was like that up until the NJO. Also its best to read all of the past books and don't start with the New Jedi Order. Here are a few of the books in the order they were published.

Here is a site that has all the books listed in relation to how many years it takes place after Star Wars: A New Hope.

    http://rebeldream.swsites.net/rebelreview.htm

    I hope this helps.

Watch it! One important note--at least skim through or read an outline for the Dark Empire graphic novels. I read the Thrawn Trilogy, then went ahead and started with the Jedi Academy trilogy, and was completely confused because the Dark Empire comics come between Thrawn and Jedi Academy. There's a lot of stuff that goes on in those comics.

This does become a bit confusing, doesn't it?

I also suggest reading the Black Fleet Crisis...of course, I'm one of the few who enjoyed it. Oh well.

I'm another one of the few who enjoyed the Black Fleet Crisis
(that awful nickname up there, ChimealH., also likes them)

But actually there doesn't happen anything that important. The Yevethans are mentioned by name twice after the trilogy, I think.
