JCC New Zealand General Election Thread

Now that Scotland is done, time to move your attention to another country nobody cares about. General election tomorrow in New Zealand. 2 term centre-right currently governing alone National Party looking likely to lose their clear majority. Will have to form a coalition to continue governing after an extraordinary tumble over the last few weeks.

If the Centre-Left can cobble together a coalition with the Greens and another liberal or centerist party, they might be able to take the power from the encumbants.

What will happen tomorrow is that no clear winner will emerge, and we will have weeks of negotiations.

Kim Dotcom of Megaupload has been, incredibly, centre stage during much of this, bankrolling an "Internet Party" which merged with a Maori "Mana" party, getting Edward Snowden to do a telelink to reveal the governments deceptions. It's been a circus, for sure. Tied in with this very tangentally has been our Prime Ministers knowledge of the Five Eyes spy network, and illegal wholesale gathering on NZ citizen's metadata without due cause. It's been fascinating.

How do Kiwis feel about this? I've always had a positive view of her as an outsider.

 

I find it a brave and incredibly responsible decision. Most politicians/ business leaders/ other professional people with power don’t have the maturity to set aside their ego and make a decision based on an honest assessment of their own capacity.

ETA: To clarify, though, I’m not a Kiwi.
