    So, I'll ask the pepper expert here Darth Gangrenous - does one wash jalapeños when you chop them?

    I ask because I made cornbread with fresh jalapeños earlier, and I split the peppers and then held the halves under running water to wash the seeds out. I've now been coughing for over an hour. [face_worried] it didn't splash or anything, it was the smell and it was overwhelming. The cornbread is excellent, but my throat and nose still burn.

    You should always was produce before using it. I always wash them before cutting them and if I want to remove the seeds and membranes, I either scoop them out with a spoon(after cutting in half length wise) but I normally leave all that stuff in since I like the heat.

    As far as your throat and nose, the smell will sometimes cause me to sneeze and/or cough which can last fora while but unless you have some sort of breathing difficulty i.e. asthma, COPD, etc... you should be okay. Did you by chance rub your nose at anytime after cutting the peppers?

    Also, it's a good idea to wear latex/vinyl gloves to protect your hands as handling peppers can cause chemical burns which can be painful for hours and the capsicum can stay on your fingers/hands for quite a while so you have to be careful that you don't rub your eyes, nose or other sensitive areas.

    I think my mistake was washing after I cut it in half. That seemed to spread the scent - if that makes sense. :p It reminded me of chopping really hot onions and breathing it. I've had some warm tea and finally stopped coughing.

    Get a bunch of hot peppers, run them through a juicer, put the liquid in a spray bottle that has an adjustable stream and "Bam!", homemade pepper spray. You just have to make sure to keep it primed.

    not kidding.
    it's made to FDA regs.
    and I've sprayed it on scrambled eggs and eaten them before.

    it's just really really really really powerful Texas Pete.

    It was my understanding that it gets everywhere when you spray that stuff. I've seen people mess with pepper spray outside, and that didn't work out so well.

    At a bar one night, one of the bouncers went to toss someone and the guy's gf/wife decided to spray the bouncer. Well since it was inside, it wasn't just the bouncer who suffered. Many of us ended up with burning eyes.
