Reptiles smuggled in garden gnomes Tue Jun 19, 4:44 AM ET

During a routine check of international mail on June 10, an officer discovered two snakes and three lizards stuffed inside three of the diminutive garden figurines in a shipment from Britain.

"When the package was opened, the officer spotted several snakes moving about. The package was immediately resealed," Australian customs said Tuesday in a statement.

A day later, officials at the same facility X-rayed another package from Britain and found five snakes and five lizards stuffed inside pottery figures and other ornaments.

Both packages had been had been declared as gifts.

It was not immediately clear what types of snakes and lizards were in the shipments.

It is illegal to bring live reptiles into Australia without a license. No one was arrested over the incident, but customs said its investigation was continuing.

Wildlife smuggling carries a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment and fines of up to $92,000 if convicted.

The reptiles had to be euthanized due to quarantine regulations.

    Pathetic animals

Young 9 year old Qui-Gon was in one of the large gardens of the Jeditemple. Their crèchemaster had taken them there and he was playing with Mace and Benno a game of find the gnome. One of them was hiding it and the two others had to find it.

Qui-Gon used a Force leap to duck behind a large rock and when he looked up he saw a garden gnome staring at him.
He smiled and remembered when Mace had bought it yesterday in the small shopping-centre near the Temple.

?Got ya? he shouted triumphantly and he grabbed the little gnome. He released it immediately when it started to make hissing sounds.

Crack bump the gnome went and lay shivering lightly.

Qui-Gon observed it and yelled ?it has come alive. It?s a haunted gnome.?

Mace and Benno had heard him and peeked behind the rock.

The gnome had struck a little rock when it fell and a small crack was visible in his hood.

Mace said with a grumbling voice ?You have destroyed my gnome. You?re a disaster Qui G...? and he stopped when the gnome moved some more and a tail appeared in a certain place.

Benno observed it and started to holler with laughter.

The hood was decorated with a reptilian plume, correction head.

Qui-Gon said ?oh no there is a pathetic animal inside. It needs care? and he grabbed the gnome again.

He walked towards the exit of the garden and towards their crèche assistant followed by Benno and Mace.

Mace was sulking. It has been his gnome and that clumsy gundark had destroyed it. He remembered the rockhound incident and that had been disastrous for him too.
His fluffy old blanket was used by Qui-Gon as a nest for a rockhound that he had found in that same shopping centre and that pest had gotten six little pests. He had dumped the entire lot in the laundry room because he wanted to clean his blanket and that had been the beginning of more disasters.
That laundry room had been the beginning of another adventure and a ride on the banister which ended atop of a lizard and after that in medroom number 9.

Oh Qui-Gon why can?t you stay out of trouble.

Qui-Gon showed the gnome to Moari Junila and when he was doing this a snake came wriggling out of it.

Moari shrieked ?not again Qui-Gon Jinn. Why are you always picking up stray animals??

The snake dropped to the floor and went into one of the ducts of the temple.

Benno said ?it?s slithering away and now it can go everywhere.?

Moari said ?Jinn, you?re an animal disaster.?

Tap, tap, tap a soft sound was heard and master Yoda came walking towards them.
Yoda said ?animal disaster he is not, res

But of course Yoda knows what to do with snakes and lizards! Especially considering his future home on Dagobah. :) But it is a shame that some of them died. Poor Qui-Gon probably felt a little bad about that, but he did get to rescue some.

Awww...I loved how Qui-Gon's immediate reaction was to take care of the snake and thank the Force Yoda was able to rescue the rest of them and find them new homes.

Mace should be more compassionate :p, though at least he got a brand new gnome to play with.

    Great response to the challenge

That was a cute story. I also enjoyed that there seems to be an early habit by Qui-Gon to pick up 'pathetic lifeforms'. :p
