Principal questions whether English should be compulsory in senior years of school

GAHHH. Of course it should be compulsory!

 

English should be compulsory, but it needs to be reformed in a manner similar to the way senior level maths was reworked. That, and the teachers need to be competent in teaching the subject.

 

I'm not going to make a comment about what teachers should be like!

I think if they went into a school they'd find it very different to what the media and parents like to believe their small angels are up to. English (either Comm or OP) should be compulsory, and teachers try their damn hardest to make sure everyone suceeds. However, if all a kid wants to do is write his name on a piece of paper and hand it in (Don't think it happens? I took in an assignment like that today) then that's about all you can do. The old saying about the horse and the water comes to mind. The other problem is that the English course as it stands in Queensland is too hard. Like the Modern, Ancient and Sociology courses, it actually asks students to do more than they would often be asked to do in first and second year uni. While they are perfectly capable of doing work at this level, it often comes down to time and the concept that learning the material isn't useful in later life and so why should they bother. The simple fact is that even if it is about Shakespeare, we are actually more concerned with your ability to write and write well than your ability to recite Act 1-3 of Macbeth. While English Communication is waaaay too easy (although some children need it) and you'll often find really intelligent and well--spoken kids doing it because they're lazy.

Stan Winston is Dead

Truly a master of his craft. He will be missed.

Very sad, one more master craftsman off to that workshop in the sky. At least we know the special effects for Judgement Day will be fabulous (too soon?).

 

He was younger than I thought. Such a pity; I think I'm going to dig out some of the films he worked on and watch them again.

Unsurprisingly, AICN has a letter from James Cameron talking about Stan Winston and his relationship with him for the past 25 years. Pretty much sums it up.

It did... a few times in the past week actually.

And as for the news of Stan Winston dying - that was a real WTF moment!

 

A damn shame. He made his contribution to the world, but in cases like this you always have to wonder what he might have gone on to create.

James Cameron's letter above is very touching - a glowing appraisal of Winston as a human being, not just of his accomplishments.
