obi-wan kenobi states in a "new a hope" while aboard the millennium falcon that no ship the size of a fighter can travel deep into space! but in attack of the clones obi himself and jango fett make light speed jumps, obi does it again also in revenge of the sith! any thoughts?

Doesn't his ship in the prequles have one of those 'light speed type docking stations'?

    It does - hyperspace rings.

There's only slightly bigger ships in the prequel era, that can travel into hyperspace on their own though. ARC-170 for example. TCW Y-wings.

Will leave this be for a short while in case someone finds a way of taking it beyond where it's reached already. I suspect this is about the extent of it though.

TIE Fighters don't have hyperdrives. There, I said it.

In the EU, TIEs originally had hyperdrives - but they were problematic enough that the Empire took them out - vastly reducing the cost, and making it easy to mass-produce them.

Ben Kenobi: It's an Imperial fighter.
    Luke Skywalker: It followed us!
    Ben Kenobi: No, it's a short-range fighter.
Han Solo: There aren't any bases around here. Where did it come from?
Luke Skywalker: It sure is leaving in a big hurry. If they identify us, we're in big trouble.
Han Solo: Not if I can help it. Chewie, jam its transmissions.
Ben Kenobi: It'd be as well to let it go. It's too far out of range.
    Han Solo: Not for long.
Ben Kenobi: A fighter that size couldn't get this deep into space on its own.
Luke Skywalker: He must have gotten lost, been part of a convoy or something.

He identifies it as a short range fighter first. "A fighter that size" at the time was just a throw away line of sorts. If it had been the only film you notice X-Wings didn't go that far to fight the DS either. It is not until TESB that Luke's X-Wing goes off under its own power. The WEG item that TIE fighters had no hyperdrives so they had to rely on the Empire and not steal a TIE and run off across the galaxy with its own hyperdrive makes sense.

I think the X-Wing like Vader's TIE is capable of short Hyperspace jumps.

Vader's TIE had a hyperdrive installed which allowed him to make it to the nearest Imperial base.

I'm not 100% on the source but Vader made the nearest Imperial Base in three hyperspace jumps.

We don't really know that anymore, do we? He could have contacted and been picked up by the nearest Star Destroyer. :D

Are the reference books such as Incredible Cross-Sections part of the new canon?

Not until the Story Group specifically say so, I think.
