Has anyone else noticed how much Obi Wan and chewie get along in ANH? I mean They must have had a nice freindly chat for chewie to tell Ben that he was a co-pilot, and something I only noticed yesterday, when ben and luke are walking to DB94 ben gives chewie this little wave.

Just thought it was worth a mention.

If you're spoiled, you could ask in 3SA. Since Wookiees seem to play a part in RotS, some kind of explanation might lie there.

Or Ben just knows how bad Wookiees are generally treated ("This.... thing") and is extra-nice to him because of that.

Maybe Wookies can sense when a person is genuinely good. I know he can walk and communicate(?) but he's still part animal and maybe he can sense the goodness of OB1. Just a thought. Animals seem generally more calm around people who are calm, too.

Even so, Chewie seems to think of Obi-Wan as an old fossil....

We ARE talking about the same Obi Wan that spoke the phrase

"How do I get the feeling we picked yet another pathetic lifeform"?

I don't think Obi waved because he felt the plight of the Wookies. He waved because they had just seen Chewie 10 minutes prior in the cantina, and the wave was more of an acknowledgement that they're in the right hangar...

"Why do I get the feeling we've picked up another pathetic life fore?"

Since he said this about 25 years before he meet Chewie (the first time, for all we know), I don't think it's a good agruement. He knew about Ani getting them out of Tatooine and his piloting that destroyed the Droid Control ship, and he knew about how Jar Jar got back to the Naboo and did his part to help convience Boss Nass to lend support of the Gungan's Grand Army. Considering that there is such a huge game between I and II, how many other "pathetic life forms" helped him complete his job?

I think that by the time of ANH, he been around long enough and trusted the Force enough to put him with the right being that would help him complete his mission, who ever that being may be.

Ah, Ep3 spoilers not withstanding, its simply the fact that Ep4 really was carried by Alec Guiness.

    Like Gandalf of LOTR, the old wizard had to bring the impressionalbe boy (Luke/Frodo) along on this quest;

That being said, the old wizard was the boys guide to the Star Wars universe, leading him to safety from the Sandpeople, teaching him about the force, giving a history lesson of the Empire, and of course, leading the way into new adventures.

    -Go to this Space port.
    -Go to this Cantina.
    -Interact with the strange beings.
-Advise the crew of the ship.
-"Leave that to me...." (Deactivate the tractor beam)
-"Run Luke! Run!" vs. "Fly you fools!"

Didn't Gandalf say, "Run, you fools!"?

Also, I don't know if Chewie thought Old Ben was all that...as has been mentioned already, he seemed to very much be in agreement with Han about Ben being an "old fossil."

In fact, Chewie says something, and Han goes, "You said it, Chewie. Where did you dig up that old fossil?"

What do you suppose Chewie said?

Apart from anything we may learn in Episode III:

At the end of Episode I, Obi-Wan thematically becomes Qui-Gon Jinn. He inherits his sympathy for galactic strays and some of his attunement to the living Force, some of his waywardness, and his apprenticeship of Anakin. By Episode II, he's clearly comfortable with a wide range of people and good at making friends, as we see with Dexter Jettster.
