I have been listening to the CD set of The Lord of the Rings radio drama recently. During part one, it was mentioned that the date of Bilbo's (and Frodo's) birthday party, when he departs the Shire and leaves his possessions to Frodo, is Thursday, September 22.

Today, is Thursday, September 22! :)

It also happens to be the date of the autumnal equinox this year.

Since it is the same day Frodo leaves on the quest to destroy the ring, the early part of the trip takes place as the nights are getting longer, perhaps symbolic of the journey into darkness. I don't know if there was any intended relation by Tolkien, but this is something I noticed.

Just observations I thought I would share....
