I need to listen to something new. Could someone recommend some music that's alot like some of the bands below?

    Echobelly
    Letters to Cleo
    Supergrass
    Jack Drag
    Dance Hall Crashers
    Ozma

All these bands are fairly obscure in the States, and it's getting harder and harder to find good music, since I've given up on the radio and MTV and whatnot.

See now, the way this works, is you recommend something, then post your preferences, and in turn someone can recommend good music to you. This is a much better way to find good music than by watching your "Music" Television.

    Also, purple monkey dishwasher.

Heh, Purple Monkey Dishwasher is the name of my band.

    I would throw out:

Jawbreaker (Anything from the Dear You album)
    The White Stripes
    Solex
    Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
    Damian Jurado
    The Silver Jews
    Failure
    The New Wet Kojaks

Jawbreaker? I think I used to have that album. Was it the one with a donkey on the cover? They're kind of a punk/pop band, like Rancid?

Dance Hall Crashers are an excellent choice.

Might I recommend Hatebreed for angry days and Pressure 4-5 for not so angry days.

    hey B.

Check out some good Canadian artists like Hayden (for some dumb reason this site is full screen), Thrush Hermit (these guys brok up and I cant find a good site for them), and Poledo

Of course, Frank Black is always good and so is his former band, The Pixies

    *makes notes*

Thanks guys! I've got some downloading to do, get me some samples and all, you see.

Has anyone heard of a group called Elephant 6? It's supposed to be a psychodelic electro-rock group.

Pitchshifter is good. They're sort of a techno-metal band... not like orgy though.

B'omarr, that's the album. One of my favorites of all time and very unlike their others. Unfortunately that is one of the main reasons they broke up shortly after that album came out.

On a side note, Blake formed another band and put out two albums which are also quite good. Check out:

    Jets to Brazil

Okay, I did used to have that Jawbreaker album! I have no idea what happened to it though. An Ex probably took it in college.

Also, I want to pick up a Flaming Lips album, which is the best one?

If you want to check your local music scene, try Centromatic.

I second the Pixies. Considering that they were unquestionably one of the best bands of the last 40 years, a ridiculous number of people have never even heard of them. Seeing as they were unexpectedly mentioned on this site's front page today, I also highly recommend the Beta Band (as long as you stay away from their eponymous album).

It's Captain Beefheart's birthday today, so if you feel like breaking your mind, try out his Trout Mask Replica album, or if you want some relatively normal funky blues action, get the Spotlight Kid/Clear Spot CD compilation.

Not that these (or your bands) are at all obsucre, but you might like the Aquabats first two albums, Me first and the Gimmie gimmes, and Nerf Herder. There's more where that came from if you like them.

If you're looking for a good ska band, try Jefferies Fan Club.

The Flaming Lips' last album, "the soft bulletin" is a modern classic.

    Jawbreaker -- yes!
    Jets To Brazil -- yes!

As someone else mentioned, Me First are a fun band... actually, they are the cover band to listen to. :)

I don't know how obscure these bands may be to you (apparently they're obscure enough around here, anyway), but check them out sometime, if you're so inclined:

    Reggie & The Full Effect
    The W's
    Bracket
    Samiam
    Grandaddy
    Red House Painters
    Brave Saint Saturn
    Pedro The Lion
    Dashboard Confessional
    Thursday
    Pennytickle Corner
    The Rocking Horse Winner

Almost all the bands I've seen in the local Dallas scene play too many covers. Most of them Creed. :(

I have yet to find a real cream of the crop music stop in DFW. Now, when I lived in Boston, it was a different story...

    May I recommend:

    Spirtulised
    Black Box Recorder
    Super Furry Animals
    Primal Scream

These bands are from the fair isle's of Britland..not so obscure over there..but if you like Supergrass..I think the Super Furries will up your street.

Is Echobelly very big overseas? I don't have their 4th album yet (they haven't released it stateside). Does anyone know if it's worth getting? As good as Lustra or ON?

    "Runaway"
    "I Never Loved You Anyway"
    "Forgiven Not Forgotten"
    "One Night"
    "Paddy McCarthy"
