Obscure Music Recommendations;

Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs is my favouorite album of the last 10 years. Their latest "All Is Dream" is pretty good too.

I don't remember who said Brave Saint Saturn, but I definately agree. They're great!

 

I can't get into mercury rev, it sounds too much like neil young to me.

Just listening to it now and remembering how great it is.

 

That's a great record. Though my favorites are "The Top" and "Disintegration".

 

Has anyone ever heard of the Australian bands "The Avalanches", "The Blackeyed Susans" and "Cordrazine"?

The latter had a song called "Memorial Drive", which I loved. A girl I used to see had a tape with songs by these bands, and I always liked it.

 

Let me assume, skawookiee, that you are a fan of Five Iron Frenzy, as well?

B'omarr may I suggest the following ( I also like Echobelly & Supergrass and in a similar vein woudl recommend the following): -

Travis (The Man Who)
Stereophonics (first album - the name escapes me at the moment)
Manic Street Preachers (Everything Must Go, The Holy Bible & Generation Terroroists)
The Levellers (Levelling The Land, Best Of & Headlights Whitelines and Black Tar Rivers)
Ash (1977 {worth it just for the Star Wars references} and the latest album - again, the name escapes me but it has Shining Light and Burn Baby Burn on it)
Ride (Start with OX4 - The Best of & if you like them then invest in Nowhere & Going Blank Again)
Stone Roses (eponymous first album)
Therapy? (Troublegum - a bit heavier than the rest but still a great album)
The Blue Nile (Hats, Peace at Last & A Walk Across The Rooftops - they've only made three albums and each is perfect)

Again, these are mostly British bands, but all the albums mentioned above should be readily available from Amazon.co.uk

If you want a starting three, get The Stone Roses, Levelling The Land and Hats.

 

If you like Letters to Cleo, you probaly would like Belly and Julian Hatfield.

whoa, do i have some obscure music for you!

My fav:
Banco de Gaia - Great Englishman who samples some wicked asian/middle eastern sounds and whacks in a real atmospheric base to make the best mood music in the world.
Mercury Rev - Awesome, if somewhat placid. Darkness Rising is one of my favourite chill out songs.
Endorphin - This Australian artist is heralded internationally as 'the best undiscovered dance artist in the world today'. His cosmopolitian and urban grooves really get your emotions playing on high.
Goldfrapp - Oh..My..God! Ms Goldfrapp's vocal's could melt any man's heart, and her music is not only surreal and atmospheric, but worth getting just for the unusual and obscure lyrics!
Muse - Some inspiring ballads mixed with some really energitic rock, this group are going places. Feeling Good is a mini-hit world wide and a kriffing good song to boot!

Phew, well, there you have it! The best music IN THE WORLD, according to PoT.

Oh, and btw, I agree with whoever said the Corrs. They are awesome...as are The Avalanches!

I haven't listened to anything on your list so I don't what type of music you're looking for.

Let's see: I've got a few Juliana Hatfield albums, she's pretty hit or miss sometimes. I like Tanya Donnelly, but wasn't a big fan of her Belly days.

One of my good friends is really into Mercury Rev, but I could never really appreciate them. Same with the Cure and the Pixies. They're good bands, just not the type I'd spend hours listening to, they're too sad

Berkamp, I've listened to some of the bands on your list, and I really like a bunch of them. I have Ash's 1977, and the Stone Roses album. I'm familiar with Ride but I'll check out those other bands. Thanks.
