But Reed Richards shouldn't quip! He's all gravitas. He's a prematurely middle-aged guy who's too smart and too serious-minded to be a normal guy. That's kind of his thing, or at least it was when I read the FF.

 

So does Miles Teller's face explode, and does Ben Grimm vomit rocks all over his food before eating it?

Yup. And Reed does all the pimp slapping.

 

Reed is definitely more serious than most, but the guy isn't entirely quip-less. He's had more than a few "I'm eons smarter than you" one liners in his day. I'm not saying he's as fast paced as Johnny Storm, that guy is the one who should and is always the funniest guy on the team, but Richards has dropped a one-liner or two, which Teller is very good at.

Well, Trank was comparing his film to the previous two Fantastic Four flicks and source material, so it definitely is an opportunity to do a more tragic and dramatic film as the bar was set pretty low. And thumbs up for Trank for going with "tragic and dramatic" as oppose to the cliche' "darker and more realistic" phrase.

I'm disappointed that there wasn't an image of the Thing or Doom. Perhaps in the second trailer we'll get so see them.

My dread for this film has turned to optimism.

 

Hmm. Definitely makes me think there will be "body horror" elements here, which is a potentially interesting take. There's always been a little bit of that with Ben Grimm I suppose, but honestly I don't know that if I suddenly became super elastic or combustible that I'd be looking to put on a spandex outfit and go save the world. In reality it would be rather horrifying.

Normally my response to taking things in a darker direction--particularly The Fantastic Four, where the source material has typically been comparatively light--would be "Can't movies just be fun anymore?". But they tried that twice before and it didn't work. I'm game for a new approach with these characters.

dp4m, that wasn't referenced in the article Adam of Nuchtern posted. If Trank has said that in the past I missed it (I'm not exactly following this movie on a daily basis). But I can see his logic. The distance between Fantastic Four, Spider-Man etc. and The Fly isn't as far as we might think. It's just a different interpretation of the same basic premise (guy is transformed or altered in some way). In the comics that usually means putting on a costume and fighting crime. In The Fly it means vomiting on doughnuts and keeping your body parts in boxes.

Not gonna like, while still looking like a train wreck -- that shot of Doom on the big screen gave me chills.

 

I think the movie looks quality, but it's simply not my Fantastic Four. I've not read Ultimate FF, I'm sure it's in synch with that, but for 616 FF it's totally wrong.

 

Somehow looks even worse than the teaser.

 

So Miles Teller is basically playing himself in another movie?
