The weather had better clear up, or I'm going to ram something into someone. :D

monkey_abbott: Yes, it did, but it wasn't a total washout (pardon the pun)

First Day of Filming Report (abbreviated)

I was under the influence of two emotions whilst down south.

First, utter frustration with the weather.

Second, dumbstruck admiration for the gutsy determination of our cast and crew to get as much of the job done as we could...and for which I am enormously grateful personally. If there's such a thing as guerrilla filmmaking, we did the definition of it this weekend.

Saturday in short terms pretty much went like this: 6:00 a.m. start, awakened by a chorus of mobile phone alarms. Ingest large quantities of tea, coffee, other stimulants, fruit bread (in my case), and other breakfasty stuff. Pack, dress cast, put in braids and hair extensions, force Shadow_of_Evil's legs into a tight set of gators, Look outside: weather raptus regaliter (royally screwed). Wonder whether we're wasting our time. 6:05 a.m.: weather looking better. 6:15: weather screwed again. 6:20: weather still not bright, sunshiny, but rain is only in sprinkles. Decide to head down to the beach and make it happen. Approx 7:00 a.m. -- 1:00 p.m.; get 60% of scenes and conversations down in surprisingly short order. Very few blown takes; maximum was three on one take, but nothing more. Between covering the camera and cast with coats, blankets, umbrellas, all shots on that part done. 1:00 p.m -- 1:30 p.m.; lunch break. Weather getting worse. Rain heavy by 2:00 p.m. Cast, crew, and director sitting morosely in a gazebo down by the beach. 2:15 p.m.: Weather slightly better. Decide to tough it out and get as much done as possible. Another 20-30% of scenes and conversations completed.

By 5:00 p.m., principal cast rained on, but happy with the amount of material we've got (including material for a trailer, monkey_abbott, so check back with S_o_E soon ;) ). Retire to accommodation exhausted but smiling.

Sunday morning: weather good, 7:00 p.m. -- 9:00 a.m. Then it starts pouring again. Out of time, we decide to do the rest in roughly 2 weeks' time.

Frustrating part: drive from about Bunbury to Perth unmarked by any rainfall whatsoever. Director thinks kindly of cast, curses the weather gods for being fickle.

Summary: Goddamn hard work and infinite patience displayed by everyone involved, and a good deal of usable material gathered. A successful weekend!

Anyone else want to check in with their viewpoint on what happened?

well we had three top miniDV cams down there for filming... the main camera was a 3CCD cam so that made for kick ass quality

Wow - if there hadn't been so much rain - the footage would'be been incredible (me thinks from a pic of Drew in costume with dark clouds in background and sandygrass stuff blow back by the wind)

can't wait for more pics :D

Just for completeness' sake, there's no rehearsal and no filming this weekend. Y'all relax so we can get back into it next Saturday. I've rescheduled the City of Melville shoot for 2 weekends from now. ;)
