Looks like we will have our first Star Wars Movie that won't be scored by Williams.

An Academy Award Winner with a resume including Harry Potter. He's also worked with Edwards on Godzilla. I'm happy with the choice.

    His whole filmography is awesome.

I'm very happy that Lucasfilm didn't go with the Horners and Zimmers - who are all great but they are everywhere and it is nice for the other guys ti get a look in. ;)

So as I suspected it seems Williams will only be scoring the ST. I’m okay with that. It was highly unrealistic to assume someone of Williams’ age would be doing everything.

The Imitation Game and The King's Speech are his best I think.

Horner could do it well. He did get his start scoring Star Wars rip-offs like "Krull" and "Battle Beyond the Stars".

I think his Tree of Life score is the best, even though very little of it was actually used in the film!

You misunderstand;) - I said the Horners and Zimmers of are business are all great, I'm just very happy that we are getting composers less well known.

Desplat has a large body of work. but his name isn't as easily recognised as Horner, etc.

If that. He was already semi-retired, he may decide on fully retired.

I never expected Williams to score one of the Spin Offs.

For all we know, TFA may be all he does in this new era of Star Wars.

It's cool to see positivity about this so far. Too often our fandom quickly devolves into: "What? Something is going to be different!?! WHY DOES DISNEY HATE STAR WARS!!!!!!"

Somewhat of a surprising choice, to be honest. I like generally like Desplat and I think he'll do fine, but I think fans will have to temper their expectations somewhat. Desplat is cut from a different cloth than Williams and it's likely that his score for ROGUE ONE won't sound anything like what we've heard in a Star Wars film so far (unless he tries to just completely ape Williams' style, which I doubt he will do). Like a lot of Hollywood composers nowadays, Desplat's scores tend to be more atmospheric and ambient, where the music blends more into the background. He seems to really like the repetitive ostinato string patterns, very simplistic themes, and that delicate, sentimental piano sound. With a few exceptions (like RISE OF THE GUARDIANS and maybe Harry Potter), his scores really aren't overtly symphonic, so it's going to be interesting to possibly hear a radically different sound in Star Wars.

I'm somewhat lukewarm on this one. Guess we'll have to wait and see (hear) what happens.

...and I think this may be another clue that ROGUE ONE could end up being a more grounded, slightly more adult Star Wars adventure.

Alexandre Desplat To Score Star Wars: Rogue One
Godzilla composer reunites with Gareth Edwards

As an addendum to last week's details about Gareth Edwards' Star Wars spin-off Rogue One, it's been revealed that Alexandre Desplat will be providing the score. John Williams will be busy with Episodes VII-IX, but he can't do everything.
The French composer isn't a hugely leftfield choice, since he scored Edwards' Godzilla last year. He's also an avowed fan of Williams, citing him as a key influence on his career.
He stepped into Williams' shoes once before, taking over the soundtrack duties for Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2. His prolific CV also includes The Imitation Game, Unbroken, Zero Dark Thirty, Rust And Bone, The Tree Of Life, the Twilight films, and three collaborations with Wes Anderson. He won an Oscar, a BAFTA and a Grammy this year for The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Star Wars: Rogue One, which will presumably have much to do with X-Wing space acrobatics, will thunder to Desplat's orchestra on December 16, 2016.
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens is out on December 18, this year. As if you didn't know that already.

I love this choice I loved his Godzilla Score and he did a good Job with Harry Potter.
