I'm not sure if his specific non appearance is an intensional snub as he is still mentioned several times. He makes a dramatic entrance in ROTJ which I do not think they would want to take away from. However as a larger issue I do think Disney is doing everything they possibly can to put distance from PT and rebuilt OT sentiment. RO is one way of them reframing the prequel story.

I'm more curious why Vader has two of the Emperors Royal Guards there with him... ?

He is in a pretty compromised state. Do you think it would have been better though if they were a different colour or something?

No, just found it odd... Actually maybe some stormtroopers instead? I would imagine he would have his own garrison on Mustafar. The Emperors personal guards just seemed out of place. Don't get me wrong - I loved seeing them!

Except for SCAR squad stormtroopers are always useless in this franchise, even in the so-called realistic war movie. Even C-3PO would offer better protection. ;)

Vader getting Royal Guards isn't really a new thing, but I can't think of a specific example. I'm pretty sure I've seen comics over the years with Vader being escorted by two Royal Guards without Palpatine present. Probably because 1) he's a Sith Lord and 2) he exists outside of the official Imperial chain of command. He's special, and, in his own way, royalty. We now officially know that he has a castle / private estate, as well.

I'd rather his Manuel to Vader's Basil Fawlty.

Emperor Royal Guards with Vader is a classic "error" in my book. Remember the deleted scenes in ROTJ? They were a great example of the gap/tension between Vader and Palps.

UKS: (Yes Xylophone played two different notes....)

I like many otbers was disappointed it wasn't a more significant person but if it is confirmed to be Venee from ROTJ then I'm okay with that. As for the guards....StormTroopers would have been a better choice but I'm not gonna nitpick when we get one of the coolest Star Wars characters ever in the film. Just need them to do something next time!

That would have to be one of the most boring jobs on the Galaxy.
You might take it as being presigious and giving you access to the most powerful people in the Galaxy, but you have to literally stand perfectly still for hours on end.
And then you get at itch growing on your shoulder that you need desperately to scratch.

Couldn't the guards wait outside though? I really don't buy it that Vader will let them in the chamber. In the Star Wars comic, he killed a stormtrooper just because the poor sap saw him unmasked.

It would be cool to actually see some royal guards in action in future movies if it fits the story

The Royal Guards are the SW equivalent of the Secret Service :vader: (Note to JC Mods: Make a Royal Guard emoticon)

Yes but that was fan service for Yoda. Not enough time for action scene. Is the Vader choking scene on blue ray?
I expect to see them in action in future films and done to show their true abilities.

Aren't they protecting the Emperor's most current prized possession in his most vulnerable state?

Vader helped Palpatine all but eliminate the Jedi and help him rise to power...so it would make sense that he would give the Chosen One the royal treatment. Pun intended.

Wait, so his name is Vaneé? As in Ric Olié, Padmé, Cordé, Dormé, etc.

Maybe this dude's from Naboo... =((

On the topic of the Royal Guards, I think it's entirely symbolic of the Emepror's presence. Vader's castle was mentioned as having been constructed on Mustafar by the Emperor's himself. Having them there is superfluous, Vader can take care of himself. They're there to remind Vader of his place and I'm sure to report back to the Emepror.

As to Vaneè...I'm also inclined to believe he's from Naboo.

I don't know why, but I still don't trust the official story about this scene [face_thinking] I think this was originally a scene involving Palpatine.

(From the original trailer before the reshoots) A hooded figure in black with two Royal Guards present invokes The Emperor... Also, wasn't Vaders original scene with Krennic onboard a Star Destroyer or the Death Star?? (see the "what we are dealing with here is immeasurable power" scene)

Having Vader there with a man servant and those guards just...doesn't...feel...right... I think the original plan was aborted or changed.

I'm probably wrong, but be honest - Does it feel right Vader having two red guards with him??

I think it's more a case of "Eh, it makes enough sense to justify the cool visual".

I highly doubt it was a scene with the Emperor. I mean, if they had shot a scene with Palpatine, I think we would have gotten word about McDiarmid being involved at some point.
