I knew a girl named Joanie, who absolutely could not hold her alcohol. I'd say 60% of the shows she saw, she was passed out after an hour... seriously. She rarely made it to the end of a concert. :p

    For all Blues fans--

I recommend the movie Black Snake Moan. But, word of caution--it's laden with violence and moments that approach soft-porn.

    However, it's a wonderful film.

It draws on the Delta Blues (Mississippi) movement. It's got a Christian overtone--but it's not too preachy so I think it should be tolerable for most folks.

Samuel Jackson is in it--and he's awesome. He plays and sings as well.

The marketing campaign was absolutely horrible--so if you were subjected to it, I'm sorry. Please ignore it as it horribly misrepresents the film.

In a similar vein, I know we've passed that time of year, but Charlie Brown Christmas has some absolutely brilliant piano-centered jazz.

Howlin' Wolf. Exquisite. Spoonful is one of the most incredible things ever recorded. I never knew the blues could be so happy.

haven't been listening to much jazz as of late apart from some charlie parker and mccoy tyner, whose solo work is actually really good.

Airing on your local PBS station Monday February 27 at 9 p.m. ET.

    Performers: http://www.pbs.org/inperformanceatthewhitehouse/performers.php

I'm trying to branch out beyond my usual blues/blues-rock suspects, and I'm thinking about Buddy Guy. I've heard a decent bit of his music from Pandora, but don't own any of it. Is there one particular Buddy Guy cd that I should look into first?

Just heard a really interesting album. Basquiat Strings with Seb Rochford. Basquiat Strings is a string quintet; Rochford is a jazz drummer. They do jazz standards. It's odd and unique and occasionally amazing. There's an amazing section where a violin sounds exactly like a smoky sax off in the distance and a bit where the quintet plucks their strings and creates a sound not unlike Basie on the piano. Some of selections are fantastic. The treatment of In a Silent Way in particular is really gorgeous.

Bessie Smith is interred not far from the street I grew up on and we lay flowers there once in awhile.
