Yeah.... he's the character that developed the most, which made him one of the most interesting.

How did he "develop?" In case you have forgotten, harpuah Sawyer was detestable. A convicted criminal. He then moved to the island, where he spent several years continuing to defraud new people in the exact same way he had in his normal life. For all this, he was celebrated as some sort of big hero when the show ended, even though he'd probably done more misdeeds than any other character in the entire show, intended to continuing benefiting from his ill-gotten profits, and in all likelihood would turn back to crime once he escaped to the mainland.

He is a seedy, awful lowlife. He deserves to have rotted in jail, or else suffered some awful death.

I started re-watching this on Netflix a couple nights ago. Hard to believe it's been 10 years.

I just recently completed an entire series re-watch. There are a fair few things in early seasons that make little sense given full knowledge of events, though there are some really nice things that do click with later reveals. Even some MiB things very early on.

The ride is still enjoyable, and I think the flashbacks/forwards/sideways are even better received the second time around when you aren't so concerned with seeing what happens next with the Island storyline.

I read that over lunch today. I don't always agree with Andy Greenwald, but he got that right.

    Why hello this thread.

Some people I work with were contending that Hugo wouldn't have been a good character if he lost weight. I mean, there's a lot of his character that stems from that part of his life... But at the same time, I think one of the reasons he was actually so great was that he just said whatever the audience was thinking. He just lampshaded every crazy thing. I mean the part where he tells the story of what happened to them on the island is classic.

He would have been a great character, still, if he lost weight. Your friends are dumb. :p Yeah, his weight is part of who he is, but there's so much more to him than that. His personality is fabulous, and like you said, he was right there with the audience, most of the time. That's brilliant.

It would've been strange if he lost weight in, say, Season 2, but his entire arc is about him realising he's not a burden to the people around him and taking charge of his own destiny. If he'd lost weight S5-6, that would have entirely worked with that.

I'm working on a Friends marathon on Netflix right now, and it's fun spotting some of Lost's secondary characters when they're 10-15 years younger. Neil the Frogurt Guy and Minkowski both showed up in Season 1!
