Just figured I'd start this thing up right away again. Second verse, same as the first.

New and improved, now with 20% less flaming.

And with that, I'm off to my first day on the new job. Man, I think I forgot how to work...

    Hey, isn't today Groundhog day?

In other news I found this thread in Fan Force Communications today. It is charting the progress of the Darth Vader World Tour. I remember a couple people were asking about whatever happened to that at the last Buffython. Apparently Vader is in DC right now.

I thought Groundhog Day was yesterday, but my calendar says that today is the Nelson Anniversary in New Zealand, and I can't find Groundhog Day listed anywhere in my calendar.

Oh well. I never really keep track of that stuff anyway. :)

Well since I work around the clock, and never seem to see anything until it's happened...

All I can say is this. I never want to see another flame, spark, minor explosion, or crack, fizzle and pop!

This slamming and name calling of fans from one another will not be allowed any more. If it doesn't, those responsible will face MY WRATH, not just the forum boards. Got it?

I want people to enjoy themselves on this site, and to have fun. The fact that two groups argue with one another makes me sick. I am also tired of being contacted by the higher ups about messes.
I would prefer to get nice emais, not..."You have a problem" ones.

So people, please understand. I want this group to do well, I want it to continue past this last film, and beyond. I don't want it to go down in the anals of SW fandom as the BANNED CLUB. This also goes for others who decide to visit our forum. If you so want to say something... pm me first! I will take it up with the person. I will no longer allow outsiders to come in and start ripping either.

We either all play fair, or the sandbox will close!

Now that I said my piece, I plan on being in Milwaukee the 18-20th of Feb. So I would like to see as many of you as possible. Go out for dinner, tell some funny stories, get sloshed!

Let me knoe if you would like to meet up!

    Take care

We got in trouble for referring to beverages of any kind on these boards. You may want to edit your post.

    (How deliciously ironic!!)

That being said I'm all for a get together!

Well, for those who were wondering on my other thread(computer help)about my "so called" husband, I've permanatly banned from my own computer because I changed the security on it. He can't go to "naughty" websites now and has locked and removed the keyboard from the computer. Not that I care that much...I mean, yea, its an inconveince, but I can use my mom's computer, go to the library, etc. I just can't use the computer at home. Now for those of you who may think I'm being harsh, remember,I have two children and would rather avoid them running into one of those sites. So, that's why I'm banned.:p

Wow Tracey. That sucks. For what it's worth, I'm completely on your side about this issue. Your children come first. Every time.

Well, I'm back from my self-imposed exile. I was getting a little hot under the collar about stuff going on here and I needed a break. I should have never responded. Fanning the flames, as it were. But I'm very argumentative. I couldn't help it. Sorry all.

Anyhoo, I thought a bit of an actual social issue should pop up. Away from the boards I've talked to others about this. But I'm curious about everyone's opinions.

Socialized medicine. Almost every other country in the world has some form of socialized medicine. Personally, I'm all for it. What is YOUR opinion? For or against. And why?

    <Begin Dan?s Social Commentary>

    1) Internet Porn: I too have kids. A 3-year-old son, a 5-year-old daughter, and a 14-year-old daughter. Being a computer nerd I have 6 different computers running 3 different operating systems. All but one is in my office and strictly off limits to all kids. The other is in the dinning room and is the designated ?family? machine. We do not have any filtering or security software, but we keep the family machine in a very public place. We also keep an eye on what our kids are doing while at the computer. Contrary to popular belief, you DO have to look for porn on the Internet to get it. Yes, you can certainly get there by accident (removed link, pm this person if you want itor example) or get on a mailing list that is inappropriate. However, I do not believe that if my daughter sees a penis on the computer screen that the world will stop. I also have a really hard time with someone else deciding what is appropriate for my kids to see or not see. In general, I find many other things on the Internet MUCH more offensive than porn.

    2) Socialized health care ? YES!! I believe I?ve already had this conversation with many of you, but for me it comes down to a breakdown in capitalism when it comes to health care. If your kid is dying your demand is infinite ? it is more a question of the resources available to the parents. Many people think that socializing medicine will ?limit choice? and only certain procedures will be covered. A direct quote from Bush?s state of the union:

?These problems will not be solved with a nationalized health care system that dictates coverage and rations care.?

This is EXACTLY the state we are in now! For the great majority of us our employer dictates the coverage and an HMO rations the care. I have been self employed ? trying to get insurance on your own is next to impossible. I was spending about $800 per month for my family with crappy coverage. Socialized health care will not take care of all these issues, but I really believe we will get something that ends up being much more fair to everyone - a common baseline if you will. If you wish to buy more insurance beyong this "baseline" then that should be everyone's choice.

    <End Commentary>

I can't comment on internet porn, as I do not have children yet, but for me, I find it very annoying in terms of the stupid amount of email spam and the like. But when I have kids, I feel I will be better equipped to comment on that...

As for socialized medicine, I am very much for it. I have a very good understanding of how it is run in Britain, and let's face it, the way healthcare is run here, I understand why so many Americans become expatriates living in other countries. In Britain, because health care is provided, people are able to see doctors sooner, therefore illnesses are discovered sooner, and hundreds of thousands of pounds are saved as a result. And they have a strict system to keep people from abusing this privilege, so it all works out. Also, doctors cannot charge exorbitant fees in Britain, so there aren't many rich docs and surgeons to be found, unlike here.

We can do exactly the same thing here. But [insert big sarcastic gasp here] the insurance companies might actually take a hit, and we wouldn't want that, now would we?
A system like Britain's or Canada's would be so beneficial for this country, that the trickle-down effects would be staggering. Hell, with all the money this country would save in fewer massive medical bills, fewer lawsuits (due to early diagnosis and care), that over time, we could really send our economy on the rebound. Our tax dollars could actually be utilized for the good of our people. The middle class is beginning to merge with the poor, and richer are just getting richer. Anyone else see a problem with that?

But of course, that's too democratic a thought, right? And remember, we're supposed to be thinking about a currently unnecessary war with Iraq (last I heard we have little reason to go to war right now). As far as I'm concerned, this impending war with Iraq is for Bush and his oil buddies alone, and to take our minds off the real problems we face in this country: poverty, illness, lack of medical care, rising unemployment and all the effects that brings. Socialized medicine would bring sorely needed help to our people and our economy, but I just don't see this happening under this administration.

I've probably stirred a nest of hornets on this thread with that last paragraph (hell, I'm not even sure this makes sense really), but that's how I feel right now... [face_plain]

    On a completely unrelated note...

I am looking for some good books to read. I got done with the LOTR trilogy a while back and am looking for something else to sink my teeth into. I'm not really a fantasy fan as such, though I did love LOTR. I like science and Sci Fi and have read some Bradbury / Asimov and enjoyed that. Anyone have any suggestions? Fiction and non-fiction suggestions welcomed!

BTW - The only thing I'm really not into are crime/detective novels.

Unless you're a romance novel reader, I don't think I can help you there. ;)

However, I read Frank Herbert's "Dune" once--that was interesting, especially when contrasted with the film. I'm also told reading the book "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep", of which "Blade Runner" is based, is also very good, but I've never read it personally.

    After that, I can't say.

Have you read or are interested in the reading the EU books? They aren't the greatest, imho, but alot of people like them, so they might be worth a go for you.

    :)

If you've never read the Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy series that's a must. Very funny.

Ray Bradbury is probably my favorite Sci-fi author. From him I'd heartily recommend:
    *The Illustrated Man
    *Fahrenheit 451
*The Golden Apples of the Sun
    *The October Country
    *Dandelion Wine
    *The Halloween Tree

The Nine Princes in Amber series by Roger Zelazny is wonderful. Well the first half is, it kind of fizzles out after a while. That seems to be a common affliction of sci-fi novels though. The whole series has been collected into one volume, I saw it at the bookstore the other day.

Kurt Vonnegut has a wealth of excellent work, from him I'd reccomend:
    *Cat's Cradle
    *God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater
    *Slaughterhouse-Five
    *Welcome to the Monkey House
    *Wampeters, Foma & Granfallons

C.J. Cherryh's "Chanur" series is pretty good. It's pure sci-fi. The first 4 are the best:
    *The Pride of Chanur
    *Chanur's Venture
    *The Kif Strike Back
    *Chanur's Homecoming
    *Chanur's Legacy

I haven't read any of her other books.

If you're into Stephen King at all I'd reccomend "It". It's a long long book, over 1000 pages but it's probably one of his best. The TV movie version of this was horrible.

Stephen King and Peter Straub wrote a rather good book together called "The Tallisman" which is more pseudo fantasy type stuff than horror.

"Hunt for the Red October" and "Patriot Games" are both excellent novels by Tom Clancy, better than their respective movies.

"Dune" by Frank Herbert is quite good, as is the next book or two in the series. After that it starts to fizzle out and get boring.

And finally, for a non-fiction book I'd reccomend "A Beginner's Guide to Constructing the Universe" by Michael Schneider.
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0060926716/103-5280322-1311850?vi=glance
It's kind of difficult to describe - it's all about geometry and proportion and art and nature. The sort of stuff that makes one go "Hmmmmmm".

Ahh socialized medicine. I'll admit that there are serious issues in American health care however, there is one big issue that most of you guys missed.

Techonologically the rest of the world is behind us in medicine. I'm going to get some disagreement here from a lot of you, but I work in the industry in the administrative capacity. While I do believe that medical care should be available for everyone and it is. It's available in the form of State coverage called Badger Care. Is it good insurance? No, but it's about what you'd get in socialized medicine. Everyone can see a doctor but there is no competition. Competition breeds higher prices but it also breeds innovation and excellence. In Great Britain nearly all of their physicians are General Practioners. In the US we have physicians who specialize in specific areas of study.

Which is why so many people from other nations come here to the United States for medical treatment. Socialized medicine is fine because everyone gets the same medical treatment. However, I'm more than willing to pay more to get better treatment. Our old outdated equipment here that we wouldn't even think of using on our patients (you) is considered excellent quality overseas. So no thank you on socialized medicine. I agree there are changes to be made but socialized medicine isn't it.

Health Care is an amazingly complicated issue that very very few people understand completely. I not one of those people that understand it completely. I see it first hand and I'm up to my elbows in it. I do statistics and analysis for the folks that run the show. I know exactly how much money is involved. I also know that where I work, if you come here your chance of surviving the visit is 98%. There isn't a medical facility in Canada with a rate that high and I work at piddly little hospital here in Wisconsin. We do procedures on a daily basis that they won't even consider in Canada.

When Socialized medicine follows the standards and quality that we have here, I'll be happy to consider it for myself and my family. Until then I'll live with what I have.

    Marcy
