I never read the EU novels/comics. So,I'm not going to be upset if thier not used in the new movies. From reading this thread kind of glad I haven't. Some of the stuff seems kind of confusing. lol

I just think they should give us a Star Wars in 8:15 Minutes just before the Episode VII opening logos, giving all the crucial bits of info between Episodes VI and VII. Whatever they decide to do with that era, I would respect them for at least bothering to flesh out their narrative to mesh with something broader, even if it conflicts with what's already there. It's egregiously presumptuous, I know, but anything can happen with Star Wars, as we learned last October...:D

I'd say it is much easier to read Star Wars than watch it at this point. Some of the things available to read are actually good;) There is also the chance that a new book with a new author might be good - where as another episode/show from Dave Filoni, edited by Dave Filoni, produced by Dave Filoni is a complete non starter for me at this point.

I could go back and watch The Empire Strikes Back for the 3720th time, but that is kinda like a sports fan clinging to a championship won by his/her team 30 years ago. It is a nice memory but mostly meaningless in the present day.

I'm really, really starting to get tired of people framing this discussion in terms of quality. For one thing, the EU is far too big to just be simplistically lumped together as "good" or "bad". To use myself as a personal example: I can not only say that I like PT-era EU material while feeling that the post-ROTJ EU is rubbish, but also say that the Bantam novels and the NJO and afterward are rubbish in entirely different ways, and still be grossly generalizing (for instance, I like the X-Wing novels and some of the NJO).

And more importantly as far as this thread is concerned, I strongly doubt quality will have any bearing on how the ST approaches the EU anyway.

Dark Horse comics is where the best material is to be found. That, and Shatterpoint.

Read (or play*) anythijng that takes place prior to AotC and then re-read Plagueis. It's like continuity porn.

*Seriously, there's even a reference to the Jango Fett video game!

Glad you asked. The latest novel released a couple of months ago was the retirement novel for each of the Big 3 who are now perfectly positioned to move forward into the ST in an elder statesmen role. They seriously are on vacation right now setting up a nice clean slate for the next big chapter.

I am halfway thru the second novel in the Thrawn Trilogy and so far I like it a lot. It's got the feel of the OT down pretty good. I wouldn't mind the characters being in episodes 7-9.

I've been thinking of getting my SW fix with some more SWTOR gameplay, but dunno, I'm a bit cautious about getting back into an MMO when I have stuff to do hah.

If you have previous MMO skills and just want the Star Wars experience, do a F2P run through up to the end of your Class Story Act 3. Don't mess around with crafting, guilds, etc. and you could play it like a single player game at your own pace on your own time. It's an easy enough game for anyone with prior MMO experience to pick up and play solo without having to study, ask for help, etc.

Frankly, I don't care about Anakin Solo. That may seem harsh, but he died for a reason. I'm more interested to see how they do Jacen and Jaina. As for Jacen being ineffectual, he started a civil war. How is that ineffectual?! He sunk almost as low as possible in a short amount of time and just at the very last second, returned to himself. I wanna see that. If you don't, that's your opinion and I respect it.

Yeah, I already have a lvl 50 Sith Juggernaut and a 45 Bounty Hunter. Was just considering taking another run on the Republic side for a change ;)

I agree here. Anakin Solo never really did much in the grand scheme of things. If I had my way all I want to see in the sequel trilogy is the story of Ben, Jaina and some new characters they could bring in. I'm 50/50 with Jacen.

Because George Lucas didn't want a character who was being groomed to be the eventual leader of the Jedi order to be named Anakin and therefore his and Jacen's roles were reversed which is what most likely lead to his being killed off???

Granted that is out of the context of the story line, but that's what happened. And because of that, I think that if Han and Leia have kids, there might be Jacen and Jaina, but no Anakin. (I'm not going to hold my breath of Jacen and Jaina either. )

Poor choice of words on my part. Allow me to rephrase: Jacen Solo in LotF is a badly justified, poorly characterized and at-times unsympathetic villain with an ultimately pointless retread of Anakin Skywalker's fall.

I'm still baffled as to why anyone would want to see Anakin and Jacen Solo circa FotJ in the ST... seeing as how they're both dead.

The galactic capital when planet-side, the Falcon when not. Luke has timeshares on whichever planet the Academy happens to be on at any given time.

    Also Corellia.

While I doubt we'll see 100% adaptions of the EU characters, I wouldn't be suprised if we get "Homage characters". You know new characters who are mostly original but contain striking resemblences to certain EU characters in order to pay homage/respect to those past characters and to satisfy some heartbroken EU fans. Like have the female lead have some similar qualities to Jaina, or have a character share a fate thats similar to Jacen's. Stuff thats mostly new but will give little nods to the EU fans in hopes to make up for the fact that the ST characters will most likely not be the EU versions. Am I making sense?

I mostly just lurk here, but yes, pretty much all your posts make sense, and your sense of humor is great as well. New avatar and sig included:)

I have to agree with the general consensus of this epic thread, in that it would hard to expect more than passing nods to the EU and it's characters, and it seems doubtful any of the actual situations will be used at all. Truthfully I'm not the biggest fan of a lot the post ROTJ EU, but I can totally feel the potential pain of those that are, as so much material has been released and basically with the implied aspect that this is as close as you'll get to what happened afterwards.

In a franchise known for odd to goofy character names I don't see what it would hurt to use the actual EU offspring names where the characters might correlate, at least in gender and parentage. Jacen, Jared...what the difference? May as well use Jacen. Although I could just as easily see Darth Claire's take that it may be just the spirit of character in whatever aspects with a wholly new name if they feel that benefits their story more.

when EU fans have been reading the post ROTJ stories have they on the whole known it was only an intepretation of what might happen and not GL approved canon in relation to the story of the films? Or was it seen as official? I also wonder if the ST really does make a lot of it obselete, I guess the wookiepedia timeline will be altered radically as I take it all the details for that are taken from the books, or is there another source? I would also be interested to know how long that sixty year gap in the timeline has been there and before the ST announcment what did EU fans think was going to occur there. I guess if the ST had never been made maybe it would have just been another novel? For me SW will always be a story for the medium of film but as that timeline gap exists surely a story had already been thought about to fill that gap (45ABY - 104). It is also curious how the big 3 just happen to be almost the perfect age for their roles at that point in the story! Hope these rambling thoughts make sense to someone

the writers, and editors had no idea about the sequel trilogy, they found out, when we did, and article after article has stated, that they're not using the post rotj eu. GL considered the EU to be an AU to his filmed universe. An exam[le is the Clone Wars cartoon which overwrote the Clone Wars written EU.

Please show said articles. :) Your apparent opinion that TCW "overwrote" things is amusing given that it was being retconned as of Essential Atlas to fit, and that they've repeatedly said it'll be integrated into the existing Clone Wars EU. I mean, I know Anakin being Knighted at the start of the war instead of the end is a huge deal (sarcasm) but as it is TCW didn't really change a whole lot that hasn't been retconned.

The Atlas can't retcon TCW and newdawn12 is certainly correct that TCW, as a higher-canon source, changed both certain minor elements which can be easily explained (for example the rotation of Ryloth ) to major (for example the history and appearance of Mandalore, Dengar's backstory and the deaths of Piell and Gallia) from the EU.

Why not? The RoTJ novelization was G-canon, yet C-canon sources have retconned things from it- the planet Endor being retconned into still existing even in the post-RoTJ era, rather than having been destroyed (possibly between Ewok Adventures and RoTJ) leaving only the moon.

And the DS2 being "nearly twice as big" as the DS1 in the novel, yet Complete Cross Sections etc making it nearly 6 times the diameter.

    TCW is not above retconning.
