I know there are about three of you (perhaps more) that speak icelandic. I am planning on taking advantage of Icelandic Air's layover and a few phrases might come in handy.

I saw a commericial for GE (General Electric) where an Icelandic guy says " I need 500 kilowatts of power".

Give us a taste of your country's culture :)

Teach you bad words? Ok. Listen:

    Helvítis!
    Andskotans!
    Djöfulsins!

You don't want to know what those words mean :)

And thanks for the warm welcome, this is the most civilized discussion forum I have ever seen! Probably thanks to great moderation.

Shall I write than in Icelandic?

Og takk fyrir hlýjar móttökur, þetta eru siðuðustu forums sem ég hef séð! Líklega út af góðri gæslu.

That was what I wrote, honestly! :D

    It's a wonderful language, I wish I could speak it... :)

    Try this:
Við erum stolt af því að tungumál okkar er næstum það sama og landnemar okkar töluðu, tungumálið hefur ekki breyst mikið, líklega vegna þess að við erum lítil eyja útí miðju hafi. :D

    And in English :)
We pride ourselves whith that our language is nearly the same as Iceland's original inhabitors spoke, the language has not changed much, probably because we are a tiny island in the middle of nowhere. :D

Because you are so isolated, can you tell that certain people are icelandic by looking at them? If you have a group of people without much immigration certain traits usually begin to develop.

Is it true that icelandic is the old form of danish?

I heard that nowdays a lot of books can´t be read by danish people but still can be read by icelandic. that´s true? dunno where i heard it. might even been on the boards... :D

Icelandic is still more or less the language spoken by the vikings and in the early middle ages in the whole Scandinavia. Since then Norwegian, Swedish and Danish has evolved quite differently, but throughout the middle ages they were all very similar.

Danish and Norwegian is very similar in writing.

I think Norwegian is closer to Swedish in pronounciation though, or at least I find it much easier to understand Norwegian than Danish.

Yeah. Danish is easy to read, but hard to understand. Swedish is easy to understad and not so easy to read :)

Well, change "Swedish" to "Norwegian" in that sentence and I just might agree with you. ;)

I live in Iceland and therefore I speak Icelandic...

Here are some translations that are sometimes used in subtitles:
    Star Wars = Stjörnustríð
    Darth Vader = Svarthöfði
    Chewbacca = Loðinn (also Tóbakstugga)
    Princess Leia = Lilja Prinsessa
    Luke Skywalker = Logi Geimgengill
    Han Solo = Hans Óli

Anything more you want to learn?

Cuss words are always appropriate :p

    Also, perhaps, a pronounciation?
