I am going to do my best to explain Smeagol/Gollum in the brief amount of time I have.

He used to be one of the 'river folk', which is to say more or less a hobbit, just like Frodo and Sam. He was a decent chap, not a bad fellow until he was out on the river one day with his friend Deagol. Deagol found something on the bottom of the river, which turned out to be "The One Ring" which was lost by Isildor many years before. It's power was so potent that it drove Smeagol to murder Deagol for the ring only minutes after it was found! He made up a story about how Deagol had given it to him for his "birthday". Then henceforth, it was known as his "precious".

He turned into a liar, a thief, and a trickster and was more or less shunned by all those around him. He took to hiding in dark places, and would gurgle the word "Gollum" in his throat and people began calling him that.

He fled to under the Misty Mountains and stayed in a cave for over 500 years. The ring tormented his soul, and gave him unatural long life. Eventaully, the ring left him and came to Bilbo, and the rest we all know well enough I think.

Basically, Smeagol is a tormented creature with spilt personalities. There's the inner good "Smeagol" who is trying to shake the evil ring personality known as "Gollum". That's why he's always talking as "us", seeing as he is basically two different characters altogether.

I probably am confusing you more, but I hope you get some of what I'm saying! :)

I'm starting to think your a little lite in the loafers,if you catch my meaning.

shouldn't that be: a little lite in the Legolas?

It might be noted that Smeagol wasn't exactly the nicest of hobbits. That's why the Ring corrupted him so quickly and completely(he was ensnared by it as soon as he saw it, before he even laid his hands on it, much like Boromir) while other hobbit-kind are more resistant.

I think my birthday is near Michael Jordan's, but I'd rather have Elijah Wood's.

If you're thinking what I'm thinking, 'it' will be in the begining of Return of the King.

    With her...

If we are thinking of the same thing...

    HeHe :)

If you compare the book and the movie, they don't even compare to each other.

However, the movie was awesome! There are a couple of fanatics at my school who say it was decent, but that it was trash. If they can find a better adaptation, then be my guest.
