    Hopefully this stays in Japan.

But this is the creepiest body mod I've ever seen. I don't know how people can do this to their bodies.

Her nickname is "vampire lady," but I think either "gargoyle lady," or "snake lady," or "dragon lady," would also work.

That "bagel forehead" thing reminds me of a rejected alien design for Star Trek TNG/DS9/Voyager.

Well, Pokemon is about fighting animals until they're weak, so that you can catch them (all) into a little ball that you carry in your pocket, and then train them to fight each other for entertainment. In the real world, how would that not be animal abuse? So I can understand where the sentiment is coming from.

The thing for PETA to understand, though, is that it's fiction, and a quite fantastical fiction at that. It's inconceivable to watch or play Pokemon and think that it's supposed to be portraying the real world. There are many stories where, although they're fictional, the narrative is set in the real world. Pokemon is so clearly not one of those! :p

Sometimes I wonder if PETA ever lived in the real world.

Nah, PETA's best case scenario is all humans dieing overnight and animals ruling supreme....

...while millions of household pets and domesticated livestock slowly starve to death.

Jilted young man with two jobs wins $30.5m in lottery

    ...

Singh elected to receive the money in a one-time, lump sum payment of approximately $23 million. After taxes, he should net about $16.1 million.

But why is he receiving only 23 million when the prize was 30.5? If you choose to get it all at once, the amount shrinks?

The cash option of any jackpot is right around 65%. The Annuity includes interest so you are getting the value of the jackpot minus the interest from 20 years. Then you pay taxes on the remainder. Some states that cash option is less.

Here in michigan if a jackpot were 100 million after cash option and taxes I'd get 40 to 45 million.

Soldier tackles Westboro Baptist Church member as crowd cheers

A member of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church was tackled on Saturday by an angry soldier at a funeral for fallen Army Staff Sgt. Donna Johnson in North Carolina.
“So at the funeral today for Fallen Soldier Sgt. Johnson a Westboro member decided it would be smart to stomp on the American flag,” the blog Guardian of Valor explained. “A Soldier did not take kindly to that and broke through the line, hitting one of the protesters that was disgracing Old Glory. As he was being arrested, two other Soldiers rescued the flag.”

The Westboro Baptist Church believes that God is punishing the United States because of America’s acceptance of homosexuality, and has gained infamy for picketing the funerals of public figures and military members.

Johnson, 26, was killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan.
Hundreds of Patriot Guard Riders and others formed a line between the Westboro Baptist Church members and the funeral service.
The Westboro Baptist Church, which only has a few dozen members, is typically drowned out by counter protesters. The biker activist group Patriot Guard Riders has dedicate itself to doing just that.
Johnson’s wife, Tracy Dice, also serves in the military.

I took the liberty of highlighting that last part, since I think it's quite significant to the case.

Sadly, this soldier has laid himself open to a big fat lawsuit from the WBC, which is exactly what that group wants in situations like this, in order to get money for their 'church' (yes, I'm using quotes, as I consider them more a cult than a bonfide church at this point.):(

On the other hand, that Westboro idiot is lucky all he got was tackled and decked for stomping on a flag in front of current and retired soldiers.[face_flag]

Also, while the WBC itself is a bit whacko, I'm not sure this belongs in the wacky news thread, to be honest.
