What exactly makes a thread 'official'?

Are they sanctioned by some higher power and, if so, by what process? Does the Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in shimmering samite, stamp them with her watery seal of approval? Does Phillip's Wisdom smile upon them? Are they discussed and approved by the administration in some smoke-filled backroom of the boards?

    What's the deal?

depends on the forum. in jcc we don't really care if you want to call it official or not but they do in toehr forums.

I find that the use of tildes alternated with asterisks and Euro signs makes a thread more official than just about any other thread in a forum.

In Collecting, some Official threads have been started by CrazyMike or myself. Others have been started by users who have asked one of us after not finding a thread on the subject. Some have become official threads through renaming due to the popularity of the line or items. Generally our Official threads cover a line of figures (such as mini-busts or Unleashed) rather than an individual item.

or when we redirect dozen of redundant threads to the same long one, it can just as well become "official"

it's basically the best excuse to lock threads [face_dancing]

or when we redirect dozen of redundant threads to the same long one, it can just as well become "official"

That's where it all starts. In the 3SA/RotS forum, topics that appeared numerous times daily for things we knew little about at the time, what we did was pick the earliest created one and made it an *OFFICIAL THREAD*. Before we knew who the new bad guy was, who ended up being General Grievous, we had a dedicated thread. The same was true for Tarkin, the Death Star, and the fate of Padmé. There was no need for a thousand threads about whether or not the Death Star would be in the film or if Darth Maul was Grievous.

When the film was released, we had to set up official threads for initial and in-depth reactions to stop the flood of 'OMG it was cool. I just saw it!' threads. As we learned more about a topic and threads became more in-depth about those ideas, the less dependence we had for the official thread. As of now in the RotS Forum, I'd say most of the official threads don't serve much of a purpose anymore. Official thread creation and need is different for every forum.

In that context, also, it makes it more eye-catching. ;)

One more question: is this thread official? If each forum has its own policy on what is and is not official, does comms mirror the YJCC policy that anyone with a great enough sense of self-importance can make an *OFFICIAL* thread? If so, is this the first ever *OFFICIAL* thread in comms? That would be lovely.
