Ok, I can't get After Effects to...

    import mpeg or avi files (or anything else I export from Adobe Premiere Elements for that matter...)???????

    What version of After Effects are you using?
    Are you using Windows Vista?

    If so, there are some known issues with AE 6.5 and Vista, but there are workarounds for most.

    Try dragging and dropping the files into AE rather than the File>Import option.

    I'm actually using AE CS3 and Windows XP.......

    if you use compression, that might be the issue. AE can handle a lot of filetypes, but has issues with compressed ones.

    Any suggestions on what to export as from Premiere Elements? I've been trying all types of files.......

    My suggestion is to work with PNG image sequences, or some other lossless compression.

    Also try separating the video and audio tracks and only import the video into AE. I had a problem once with some footage containing mp3 audio which wouldn't let me open these files in AE. After using only the video it worked.
