Okay, I'm angry at R. A. Salvatore and Del Rey

And I think we all know why.

Who, do they think they are, to kill Chewbacca, when ultimately evil is insurmountable for the next...how long is the cursed NJO? 18 books? Grr...

i know...im new to EU though. well, over a year now, but just starting the NJO. i guess i was just good at avoiding chewie's fate lol

 

Feel free to direct your wrath at Del Rey, but please refrain from directing a similar ire to R.A.Salvatore, who is an excellent writer that - like so many - worked long and hard to create an authentic tale couched in our beloved Galaxy Far Far Away...

 

I just blame Del Rey. My major goal in life is to buy out the company. Or get the books away from them. They put me through a lot to escape unpunished.

 

1. R.A. Salvatore got death threats from angry fanboys, and got driven off these same boards because of flaming. Don't get angry at him, he was told to kill Chewie.
2. They killed Chewie at least partially to show that SW is getting darker, and we really don't know how most of the story is going to end up anymore. Example: Shatterpoint. In the Bantam era, Depa would have been caught and healed, while Kar would have been killed. A little different now, and I think it makes for better stories (most of the time).

 

NJO is to SW books like the PT is to SW movies.

Yeah, Chewie's death made me angry when I first read it, as did the subsequent deaths Del Rey added in.

But really, the author isn't to blame - it's the people at Del Rey and GL who made the decisions.

Besides, in a war, people die. It's sad, but it's the truth.

 

I thought Chewies Death was a nice touch to the series...

First, it set the tone that the NJO was serious. It had guts, it wasn't your old "madman gets superweapon" series.

Chewie was the perfect target. Salvatore knew it would tug on your heartstrings to have the ol' wook die. It made me hate the Yuzzhan Vong and sealed my fate into reading all the books in the NJO

And Pellaeon is right. This was the new face. Dark, really dark. And I liked it. The conflict was great, and the anatgonist even more so.

I would even say that the NJO was the defining series for Star Wars. It brought the novels back from the relative rut they were in.

I miss the Old Wook, but the way he died was very fitting.

To all those that are still traveling through the NJO, buckle up, its gonna get wild.

I'm quite angry at Del Ray for killing off Chewie. But I don't blame Salvatore for an instant. He was told what to do, and he did a brilliant job at it. Not only did he add a verbal richness to the Star Wars novels (yes they are great stories, but lets face it, they aren't exactly high vocabulary stories ), but he did a stupendious, awasome job at writing Chewies death scene. That is one of my favorite scenes of all time. Not because of the content, but because of how it was presented.


Come to think of it, Thrawn's death scene is also one of my favorite scenes. Go figure, I gess I'm a softie for death scenes

 

Um...get the Hardback version of Unifying Force, and read the CD-Rom. That will explain it all.

It's not that big of a deal. I mean, the OC's are going to die sooner or later.

Be angry at Del Rey but not Salvatore. He had no choice in the matter. He did give Chewie a great death scene and he has already been hounded by us for it.

 

I agree, leave the author out of it. I'm embarassed to say I didn't have much of a reaction.

I'm absolutely livid at Del Ray.

That's when they 'jumped the shark' as it were. Heck, thanks to the NJO, I no longer buy SW products.

The entire NJO was one big train wreck.

 

Yes, be mad at Del Rey, evil they are. Don't be mad at Salvatore because that was a well written book. IMHO

i was angry at R.A. too, but then i read the stuff on that CD, it really was entirly GLs fault, del ray just asked for a list of who could be killed, it was GL who said they could kill Chewie and Anakin, he may has started SW, but he also has made a big mess of it, i'd say he should leave it alone, let it grow and thrive, and just make money without sticking his nose where it's no longer wanted (oppionated...? me?)
