I am not saying I want to be banned or anything but I went to school the other day and then here I am today on TFN but at school I am banned, is something wrong here or what? BTW: It is not an emergency I just wondered if anyone lese besides DarthSpino and Big Boss Nass knew or had a situation like this.

Your school IP is probably banned for some reason and not your username.

Schools can ban a student's IP on a message board?

It was probably some rascally school kid spamming everything, and got banned.

One time I'm pretty sure I was IP banned, and I was able to lurk on a sock (Ack I didn't know!) - logged in. Is there different kinds of IP banned, some that let you login and lurk, and others that just give you banned.asp?

It could have been another user at your school who spammed and got IP banned by TFN.

During the whole marketscore.com (at least I think that was the name) thing last spring, I was using a friend's computer that was using Marketscore, and I could log in and read and send PMs, just couldn't post. *shrugs* Don't ask me how.

Unfortunatly, the school computer lab situation is a difficult one. Many of them use the same IP for all their machines and therefore there's no way to effectivly ban a troll without banning the whole school. We'll see what we can do.

In theory PB, that wouldn't work. Every machine connected to the internet must have a seperate IP. I don't know how the JC IP Ban system works, but unless you just blocked the Network portion of the IP and wildcarded the Host portion, it should only be blocking one computer, presuming the school is not running a proxy, or tight tight firewall.

Yeah, but then the troll can just switch computers to escape the IP ban. After a while every computer in the lab gets IP banned and you end up with the same situation.

Except that most schools and universities do run through proxies and firewalls, having only one or two computers directly connected to the net. Hence, the ban affects the main server computer, and thus all other computers in the institution that run through that server are blocked from the boards.

My old school banned www.hotmail.com but you could get to it by signing in to your account at www.ninemsn.com.... and no it didn't take us long to work that out. Don't know why our teachers bothered. ;)

I think the reason why www.hotmail.com was banned was probably becuse the network administrator from your school decided to block porn sites and all URLs that included 'hot' where in the middle of that. It's been known to happen. ;)
I think it happened in my college a few years ago, before I studied there.

It's true that some schools do have proxy servers that make all machines have the same apparent IP. Not all, but some.

You shouldn't be on the JC at school anyway. :p

In Computer class the assignments are so easy that I do them at home because they tend to bore me, since I know the stuff. So, I either go on the JC and surf around reading stuff or play games on the net.

Minesweeper is so cool! 8-} ;)

The reason that hotmail (and other internet mail services) are banned is that virii (and other undesirable files) can be easily and unwittingly downloaded via mail attachments. A lot of Companies firewall mail services such as this, restricting the employee to the business mail account which can be more easily policed.

The reason you can lurk as a sock with an IP, is this:

I was once IP banned for a week(for flaming MYSELF [face_plain] ) and I lurked with a sock.

I was annoyed because Nathan did not unban me on time(He said in the morning - I had to wait til 2:00 P.M.) and tried to PM him.

I sent it and it replied with an error stating that I was banned.

That is what an IP ban does. I believe.
