    *****************

The meditation chamber was eerily silent, its dark walls seeming to close in around the room?s sole occupant. Soundlessly, she walked to the center of the chamber, her thoughts straining to catch the single sound out of billions that she had been ordered to search for. She gritted her teeth in a brief flash of frustration upon not finding it, for she knew the consequences would be dire if she did not.

Upon reaching the center of her meditation chamber, Visas Marr lowered herself into a meditation stance, joining her thoughts with the Force. From the gloom of the darkness, red runes had appeared on four previously indistinguishable pillars. The crimson glow of the symbols cast the chamber in an ominous hue, almost as though the air itself were made of blood. Upon the air, voices seemed to drift; some human-sounding whispers and sighs, others screams and cries so incoherent as to be attributed to beings no longer human, sounds comparable to those from beings in the most extreme agony imaginable. As she meditated, Visas could feel the presences behind those voices, could feel their suffering, could sense their pain. Yet she could do nothing to aid them, for they were somewhere her abilities could not reach.

She struggled to find this single individual among the countless life-forms connected with the Force. As she sought it, her mind began to burn with frustration at her inability to locate it. She redoubled her efforts, fearing the wrath of her master should she fail. Though the wounds from her last punishment had long since healed, she could still feel the ache of the scars whenever she meditated. The pain was almost unbearable, yet it seemed to give her strength, allowing her to continue searching in spite of her flagging spirits.

Out of the shadows of her mind, a disembodied voice seemed to whisper in her ear. The voice was not the nearly-unintelligible sounds emanating from her master, however. It was a comforting, soothing voice, one she felt she should know well, yet didn?t. It was a voice much like the wind, needing neither life nor breath to be audible.

?The secret of success is constancy to purpose.?

Those brief words stunned her for several long moments. Though that voice did not address her again, its abbreviated appearance left her with questions reverberating in her mind, all of which clamored for answers she could not give. Like a demanding child, there was one thought that refused to be silent; one thought that was particularly insistent that it be satisfied.

Rousing herself briefly from her meditation, she pondered that question. Where had she known those words from? They were not delivered to her by her Master, with his ramblings of his hunger and how he desired more worlds to feed from. No, such encouragement was not in him to give.

The only place she could have possibly heard such sentiment was Katarr, maybe from a member of her own family. Had she eyes, she would have wept at the frustration of trying to place such words in her fragmented memory; one shattered by pain and punishment, healed by darkness and pain. Yet no matter how hard she tried, she could not place the memory of when those words were spoken to her. There was no use in continuing to try.

Carefully, she slid a hand beneath the veil covering her face, wiping the sweat from her brow. Katarr was a dead world now, she its only Miraluka survivor. Dwelling on its destruction and her own faltering memory would not accomplish her current task, and could very well anger her Master. She did not wish to invoke his wrath once more, so she allowed the matter to drop silently and resumed her m

Excellent work. Visas is not a character that KOTOR 2 gives much depth to. I like your interpretation. My favorite line:

Had she eyes, she would have wept at the frustration of trying to place such words in her fragmented memory; one shattered by pain and punishment, healed by darkness and pain.

    Yowsers! That is angsty-licious!

Lovely. As someone said, I missed the character development that was so essential to KOTOR 1 in 2, but you definatly did a good job of giving Visas some real life and a heart. Thank you for doing it.
