The nature of the Lightsaber crystals in Legends and the Kyber Crystals in NuCanon seems to be entirely different.

After Ahsoka introduced the concept, I personally tend to prefer the Imperial Knights getting their crystals by "cleansing" Sith ones. Makes them cooler.

Maybe the Jedi and Sith used artificial crystals at certain times in history because of difficulties in getting the necessary amount of Kybers for all members to be equipped with lightsabers.

So, I picked up Mercy Kill for my first ever re-read, and I've been having a lot of fun fitting it into my heart-canon.

Being that this is a canon of the heart, not of the head, getting fun things to fit in a fun way is more important to me than lining up every detail. With that being said:

In heart-canon generally, I've got Aftermath (minus some of the Wedge bits and some of the Coruscant stuff) playing out mostly as written through 1 ABE. Mas Ammeda and the central Imperial government/Moffrence surrender after Jakku, with things like the Pentastar Alignment, Zsinj's empire, and later, the Cituric Hegemony breaking off as small-r Imperial remnants. While Ammeda is off signing the treaty, Pestage, Isard, and a few of the Emperor's advisors seize control of Coruscant and a few other key Core worlds. Cue X-Wing comics and books, detailing the campaign to retake Coruscant and mop up Zsinj. I still like Han and Leia having a kid at 5 ABE, assuming the sequels are 30 ABE; Kylo doesn't feel like a 30 year old man to me, but a stunted 24 or 25 works. I'm still undecided about if I want to fit the Thrawn Trilogy back in, with Leia being pregnant with Ben instead of the twins; it'll ultimately come down to if they do anything with Thrawn post-Rebels.

The next bit of canon we get is 28 ABY, in the form of Bloodlines. That gives us 6 years between the founding of the Resistance and the Starkiller Incident. I see Mercy Kill fitting in there, within a year of the First Order revealing itself to the galaxy and merging with both the surviving Imperial remnants and seceding Centrist worlds. Stavin Thaal is a graduate of Cardia, destroyed...somehow... during the post-Jakku fighting. Leia has contacted Face to see if Thaal is planning on betraying the Republic to the First Order. Face is out of work because the Centrist-dominated Republic started purging anyone who had worked with Leia or Han (as Face had) after she left the Senate.

The big problem is that we can't tell this story without the Vong War, something I had not originally planned to include in my heart-canon. My workaround is to have the Vong appear as a local invasion - maybe a worldship or two along the old Vector Prime, out by Serpindal - that the Republic military handled themselves. We move Vandor-3 from a neighbor of Coruscant to the Vong invasion corridor. We probably drop the Vong's Force-immunity, since they don't need to be buffed against an entire order of Jedi. Let's put that all in ~18 ABY - enough for the original Wraiths to serve a full career and retire, and have that retirement last long enough that Piggy coming out of it means something.

I'm only halfway through the book, so I might update this accordingly.

I was relatively bored and did something.

    —-
An article written in 127 ABY by Professor Sintak Kya, Professor of Sith studies at the university of Kamparas

Operation Smokescreen, otherwise more colourfully known as Snokescreen, was a counterintelligence operation launched against the First Order, specifically against the hierarchy including Supreme Leader Snoke and Kylo Ren. While it’s exact origins are shrouded in mystery, the scheme involved the Intelligence communities of the former Galactic Alliance and Empire of the Hand in the wake of the destruction of the New Jedi Order.

    Origins

In 28 ABY the New Republic perceived that it had won the war against the Yuuzhan Vong at the Battle of Ebaq 9. Although Coruscant had yet to be recaptured, a third of the invaders armada was destroyed at the climatic engagement and the government, seeking to build on the successes of the military, moved the capital to Hosnian Prime, intending to rebuild their presence in the Core around Corellia and Kuat, what with the recent recapture of Fondor and victories in the Deep Core.

The Senate had largely been sidelined since Coruscant had fallen, all the more so due to the political infighting between the Centrist and Populist parties. In the shadows of the Yuuzhan Vong War, the First Order had sought a foothold within the Centrist party, and also destroyed the Empire of the Hand to enable them to seize control of the Unknown Regions. The gridlock prompted the Senate to suggest the First Senator, a politician who could prune away the bureaucracy. Princess Leia, who had rejoined the reconstituted Senate, was suggested by the Populists, but before the Senate could move on the decision, Leia was discredited when her parentage was discovered by Centrist Senator Cerise Sindian. During the crisis Leia detected the edges of the shadow of the First Order, and rallied with Admiral Ackbar to found the Resistance out of the Insiders movement, which had continued to mount a defence against the invaders in the face of previous surrenders by the Senate. The Senate abandoned the election entirely and the Centrists settled on seceding from the New Republic in the near future to draw the eye of the Resistance away from the Senate.

Such plots became moot when the Yuuzhan Vong rallied unexpectedly, and the capital was shortly shifted back to Mon Calamari in the Outer Rim until the conflict could be settled. The New Republic Chief of State used his political clout to bypass the First Senator debate and created a new federalism - the Galactic Alliance, which initially included the Hapans, Hutts, and, in the following year, the Imperial Remnant, Corporate Sector and even received limited cooperation from the Chiss Ascendancy. Together, the allied powers defeated the Yuuzhan Vong in detail a year later at the Battle of Yuuzhan’tar, and their empire collapsed - even as Ackbar faked his death so he could focus on the Resistance.

    Emerging Threats

The peace was rapidly shattered when the First Order announced its secession from the New Republic Senate, engulfing the former Remnant territory and other sectors in the Outer Rim. Ignoring the Galactic Alliance entirely, the First Order referenced the much older Galactic Concordance, claiming its foundation from the Battle of Jakku and peace treaty signed by Grand Vizier Mas Amedda. Amedda had offered said treaty on behalf of the Cabal that had overthrown Grand Vizier Pestage and broke away from Counsellor Rax - before the Cabal was destroyed by Ysanne Isard. Isard, acting as regent, promptly consolidated Coruscant, Kuat and even Corellia in the face of New Republic power- going far enough to blockade the former New Republic capital of Chandrila.

Drawing on the Battle of Jakku as the end of the war was not an unheard concept. At Jakku, hundreds of Star Destroyers were annihilated by the New Republic, and the Empire was unable to assemble such a fleet again for the duration of the war. It is often cited that the battles with the legitimate Empire thereafter were more sporadic, punctuated by stretches of peace between the two regimes in which they both engaged Imperial warlords. Even Isard drew not from Naval reserves but Sector fleets, and Grand Admiral Thrawn could only command twelve Star Destroyers for the first few months of his campaign before he, too, dedicated Sector fleets to the front - after Jakku every movement of a warship weakened another world, while at Jakku the Empire assembled the fleets released from their deployments by rebellion or retreat, the core of the Navy held fast there.

Simultaneously to the First Order emergence, Luke Skywalker turned to focus upon his nephew Ben Solo, who had been isolated by the death of Chewbacca and the successes of his other siblings in ending the Yuuzhan Vong War, which had elevated Jaina and Jacen to fame and indeed killed Anakin Solo. Taking the children that had hid in the Maw with his son Ben Skywalker - though his son remained with his mother Mara for a time - Luke established a new Jedi Temple and focused on working with Ben on his growing darkness.

In the vein of the new era being one of cooperation - the First Order notwithstanding - Luke accepted counsel from Snoke, a powerful Force user who had emerged from the Unknown Regions. Snoke in-fact was the true leader of the First Order, which actually reached into the Unknown Regions, and he stymied Luke and aided Ben Solo’s descent into the dark side.

Ultimately, Luke probed Ben’s mind and discovered a terrible future was coming, a future Ben too saw and would cause. In a misunderstanding of Luke’s intentions to resolve the matter, Ben attacked Luke, trapping him. Thereafter Ben and six other students massacres the majority of the forty children and younger Jedi at the Temple, including several Knights. Luke blamed himself for the disaster, for losing Ben, and for the deaths of so many students. With the Jedi Order only consisting of the fifty Jedi Masters and Knights that survived the Yuuzhan Vong, and the thirty-odd children that had hidden in the Maw, the deaths of the future of the Order and Luke’s decree that there would be no more Jedi - and his subsequent departure - cut a hole in the Order and disagreement about whether the Order should continue at all. This shortly saw the New Jedi Order collapse - and Ben Solo, now Kylo Ren, led his six Knights of Ren to hunt the remainder Jedi down. Barely a dozen students survived the massacre by being paired with masters, undermining an entire generation.

Leia, heartbroken, and estranged from Han over the disaster, dedicated herself to the Resistance. Jacen was himself absent wondering the galaxy, and Jaina was in the middle of a liaison with Jagged Fel. Many other Masters and Knights were not present at the attack, but the damage had been done and nobody was willing to trust the Order with Force sensitive children as long as there was a risk that the Jedi Order’s teachings would continue to perpetuate the creation of darkness within its ranks.

The New Republic wilfully ignored the First Order and the Centrist traitors in the Senate kept it so, all the while casting the Resistance as terrorists driving the galaxy towards war. A new Cold War had arisen, none too dissimilar to the one between the Empire and New Republic following the Battle of Ord Cantrell.

However, a plan arose to bring the War into the open, with various parties recognising that the galaxy was working to Supreme Leader Snoke’s timetable and fearful of what was to come.

    The Plan

Where the idea originated is unclear. Some believe that Dif Scaur, former Director of New Republic Intelligence, wished to redeem himself after nearly depopulating the galaxy with the genocidal weapon Alpha Red on Caluula, started the mission. Others believe that Princess Leia, knowing her son Ben, put together the ultimate bait. Similarly, Cal Omas, known for his willingness to embrace reluctant extremes at Miranda and with the Galactic Alliance Guard, has been posited to be responsible, acting even in a period in which the Galactic Alliance was defunct.

However, there is more of an argument that the plan was ultimately the actions of the Sith known as Lumiya, whose own plans involving Jacen Solo would be jeopardised by Snoke and Kylo Ren. Regardless, there is ample evidence to suggest that at least some of the New Republic Admiralty and Leia herself agreed to the plot. Much of the present officers of the line avouch that only General Bel Iblis was aware, and his actions certainly suggest as much.

Taking advantage of the absence of Luke, and that Han was estranged from Leia, a cloning facility in the possession of the Remnant of the Hand created clones of both Han Solo and Chewbacca, whilst ensuring that knowledge of Lor San Tekka and his map to Luke Skywalker became known. With the clones released into the fray seeking the Falcon, the conspiracy allowed both the clones and the map to come to Jakku, in an elaborate lure for Kylo Ren, knowing full well that he would be unable to resist the lure of the map. Similarly they knew that if the Falcon or Han became involved in the escapade, Kylo would not only put himself in harms way, but he would keep doing so, and he could be baited deeper, and deeper, into New Republic space. Whilst the Millennium Falcon was not something which Han would merely hand over, the Millennium Falsehood was in a public museum, and could be requisitioned quite easily, and placed on Jakku in the hands of a local junk despot.

The inevitable damage to Republic worlds would not only galvanise the Senate - with some judicious pushing - but the NRDF would prepare to advance and secure the border between the Unknown Regions and Republic Space. General Bel Iblis, seemingly fully on-board with the plan, began the painstaking task of amassing the First Fleet and other support craft over Hosnian Prime, while Supreme Commander Sovv generally prepared to bring the Republic military to readiness. As the dreadnoughts Viscount, Guardian and Harbinger joined the First Fleet at Hosnian Prime, the Bounty was painstakingly pushed to completion by the Mon Calamari even as the Raddus, a prototype of the prototype Viscount - in spirit, at least - was released to the Resistance.

As skirmishes in the ostensibly neutral New Territories increased, the conspirators watched with some concern as Poe Dameron and Black Squadron chased First Order Agent Terex back and forth over Lor San Tekka, with Kylo Ren following the investigation from afar. With the intervention of Leia, Dameron escorted Tekka to Jakku, in reach of the Unknown Regions - and Kylo Ren took the bait.

What followed next could not have been foreseen by even the most negative of analyses.

    Hosnian

Kylo Ren acted as expected, pursuing the map and indeed the ersatz Falcon deeper into New Republic space to Takodona, after having erased a village on Jakku. The Resistance, having also gathered all manner of evidence of First Order excesses on Vodran, Otomok, Vardos, and Casssander too, was poised to hand evidence to the Chancellor in person. Whilst nobody had foreseen scavenger Rey and the defecting Stormtrooper Finn to end up in possession of the BB-unit that held the plans, and then to steal the Falcon before being scooped up by the clone Han Solo, the net result saw Kylo Ren lead a Star Destroyer across the Western Reaches.

The fact that a team of Jedi reported on the following events in the Hosnian system to the New Republic Defence Force suggests that there may have been a component of the plan that involved the Order, and some of the less sanguine analyses suggest that the Jedi may have been planning to launch a coup against Chancellor Villecham if he refused to act, with the aid of Bel Iblis and the military police.

Regardless, those out-system teams were the ones who reported what followed; the complete destruction of the Hosnian system, the entire First Fleet and gathered dreadnoughts and battlecruisers, the seated Senate, and the Chancellor himself. The First Order had taken the bait whole, and revealed the Starkiller weapons platform.

The New Republic recoiled in horror, and the admiralty rushed to mount a response against a wave of despair and outright fatalism. Compounding matters, the surviving Senators, including Treen of Kuat, Bramsin of Coruscant and others, met and ordered the remaining task forces and home fleets to disperse, simultaneous to Star Destroyers crossing the divide between the Unknown Regions and Northern Dependencies, essentially abandoning the fight. Similarly, the First Order had used Starkiller to reveal the location of the Resistance Base, and the superweapon turned its sights on D’Qar, further into the Western Reaches than even embattled Takodona. The Cataclysm gutted the Republic, but the following events saw the rest of the body being given up to fade away.

However, by the time the admiralty managed to meet, the Starkiller had been destroyed by the Resistance, extending the slim chance they had left. But by the meeting, three Bothan fleets, as well as the Corellian, Commenori and Wookiee fleets had all pulled back to their respective homeworlds. This left a diminished Navy to prepare an assault - one which would have to run counter to their standing orders to surrender, and the abject terror filling the galaxy. The plan, for all intents and purposes, had failed dramatically, and reports that Han Solo died at the hands of his son dig deeper into morale, even if he was the clone.

But such was the arrogance of the First Order, confident in their victory and ability to win, that they finally took the bait - even if the bait was now the apparent collapse of the New Republic.

    Snoke emerged from the depths.

    Last Hope Falls

A week after the destruction of Starkiller Base at the hands of the Resistance, the First Order struck back at D’Qar, beginning a day hour long engagement between the four ships of the Resistance fleet, and two First Order dreadnoughts and thirty Star Destroyers - including the mobile capital and shipyard monstrosity that was the Supremacy. Though the Resistance Fleet was eventually destroyed in total, with Admiral Ackbar lost, as well the majority of the Resistance as an organisation, the First Order lost the two Dreadnoughts and half a dozen of the Destroyers. The Resistance now dug down on Crait, deeper still in the southern quadrant, having led the First Order on retreat after retreat.

Leia reached out to the surviving admirals and Cal Omas, but those leaders were unable to corral ships and men which had given up, and were fearful of the still awesome array of firepower that the First Order had gathered above Crait.

The war was for all intents and purposes over.

    Turnaround

The original desire to find Luke Skywalker and end the First Order had been forgotten by the galaxy at large in the face of the juggernaut even now ‘forcing’ the surrender of worlds which had always intended to join the First Order - traitorous Centrist worlds and the like - but not by the Resistance. Leia sent Chewbacca and Rey - revealed to be a Force user that had been selected by the Cosmic Force to rebalance the scales in the light of Kylo Ren’s rise - to use the map to find and collect Luke from the first Jedi Temple on Ach-To in the southern Unknown Regions and return him to the fight.

Luke had refused, citing again that the Jedi had to end to end the cycle. Rey failed to convince him otherwise, and so she turned to her latent connection with Ben Solo for solace, but she did push the Jedi Master to open himself to the Force, and discover his sister had been injured in the pursuit from D’Qar. Galvanised to act, Luke intended to follow Rey back, but discovered her and Ben communing in the Force. In his disgust at what he viewed as Rey’s pending fall, and the mistake he had made in training Ben, Luke refused to leave. After a discussion with the spectral form of Yoda reminded Luke that he was to pass on not just his teachings but his failings, he decided to aid Rey, but by this point she had left with Chewbacca to return to the war, stealing sacred Jedi texts that Luke appeared to have abandoned - and indeed had intended to burn.

But Luke knew that he could not reach Leia in time without the Falcon, and so he created a connection to the wellspring of Ach-to, and followed in his X-wing. Rey, however, arrived to convince Ben to join her, for him to present her to Supreme Leader Snoke aboard the Supremacy. The original plan had succeeded to draw the wily darksider out, but nobody was placed to act against him. Only the treachery of Ben Solo, who desired Rey as an ally, saved them; he killed Snoke and with Rey massacred the Praetorian Guard - as the Raddus split the Supremacy in two in a hyperspace kamikaze.

Success had been achieved, with the First Order’s mobile capital and primary shipbuilding facilities destroyed and their masterful Supreme Leader dead, but there was no New Republic spirit to galvanise. As Kylo Ren and his walkers inexorably marched across the Crait battlefield, the flame of hope had guttered out as there was nobody able to respond to Leia’s final call to arms.

    Save for one person.

Luke Skywalker appeared among the wreckage and lured Kylo Ren into personal combat. This allowed the surviving rebels time to escape with Rey and Chewbacca aboard the Millennium Falcon. In-fact, this Luke was an illusion, making use of a doppelgänger on Ach-to and himself as a conduit of an extensive deception. When Luke allowed his trick to end, he faded from sight on Ach-to and Crait, having left behind the Luke Skywalker who recriminated endlessly against himself for what had happened, before he and his X-Wing returned to the fight.

    Hope was restored.

    The Fight

The story spread like wildfire across the galaxy, and the New Republic admiralty found their call to arms replied to at last. Cal Omas declared a Galactic Alliance anew, and the Jedi Order rose from hiding to support Luke as he returned to the galaxy.

The Alliance fleets, Jedi and Hapns converged on Coruscant, seizing the world before the First Order could reach it. Kuat and other former Centrist worlds quickly accepted the changing tide, but the battle was completely turned when Cal Omas offered the defunct Moff Council the opportunity to benefit from betraying the now Supreme Leader Kylo Ren; territory. Some twenty sectors were awarded to the Imperial Remnant on the thirtieth anniversary of the Battle of Jakku, which was considerably more palatable to Imperials and Centrists who had been sidelined by the new, zealous generation of First Order officers and stormtroopers led by General Hux, than supporting a regime which not just created but used Starkiller Base. The Megador was handed over to the Alliance even as the Bounty was released from the shipyards on Mon Cala, consolidating the Alliance position.

Without the Supremacy, without Snoke, without the Centrist and Imperial support in the Northern Dependencies and Core Worlds, the First Order was forced to retreat as swiftly as it had advanced, many of its fleets out of position when events turned against them.

The war was won, a brief if bloody moment where the war went hot, rather than cold.

For now, of course, as the true knowledge of the First Order’s territory and power remained hidden in the Unknown Regions - which was where the next stage of the elaborate Cold War suddenly moved to. The Dark Nest Crisis and Swarm War that occurred in the space between the Chiss and Alliance border seemed to be the legacy of a plot that originated with Snoke himself - but was seized upon by Lomi Plo, Dark Queen of the Gorog.

    Aftermath

Acknowledging the precarious position she was in as former New Republic Chief of State, Princess and Senator of the Alderaan Sector, and later Jedi Knight in service of the Galactic Alliance, Leia stepped back from the Rebellion over time and allowed the next generation led by Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron to take over the conflict with the First Order, which remained centred around Kylo Ren and General Hux.

The Alliance government generally eschewed involvement in the conflict, avoiding any censure of the rebels, while various worlds threw their lot in with the rebels, fighting the First Order across neutral worlds and the like. Such operations were ostensibly looped under the Alliance Ninth Fleet, which originally included older vessels such as the Galactic Voyager, Home One and Song of Hope. The mission of the Ninth was classified, adding an air of mystery to it, but also insulating the Alliance from a wider accusation of inciting violence against the First Order; official policy remained to ignore it.

Two years after the Hosnian Cataclysm, and a year after the Battle of Qoribu, the Swarm War represented a difficult balance between the Alliance appeasing the Chiss in their war against the Killiks, and controlling the Jedi Order, parts of which were entangled in saving the insects from speciecide. The possibility of the Empire of the Hand convalescing again to protect the Chiss in opposition to the Alliance threatened the position of the Imperial Remnant and the wider detente with the First Order.

The Chiss decision to devastate the Killiks was based upon several of the Ruling Families becoming dependent on the Killiks in the years before two Dark Jedi and a kidnapped Jedi Knight fled the Yuuzhan Vong. The safeguards between the Families and the Killiks were sabotaged and civil war among the Chiss broke out - resulting in the Empire of the Hand intervening and being out of position when the First Order acted against it. The scheme is likely to have originated with Snoke to take the Chiss and Empire of the Hand off the playing field in anticipation of the Centrists’ actions in the Senate, but it laid the kernel for the clone plot against Snoke during the Cold War, and the subsequent three way Swarm War between the Alliance, Chiss and Killiks.

The Jedi and Cal Omas managed, with some difficulty, to avoid a greater war breaking out by defeating the true irritants in events - the Dark Jedi Lomi Plo and Welk, who were actually Sith, and taking back the kidnapped Jedi who had been the centre of the Killik hive mind. What the Swarm War did do is feed fuel to the Centrist machine, as various First Order aligned companies had armed the Killiks to seek to destabilise the Alliance, and the allies of the Jedi on Hapes interfering in the first place drew the Alliance into the conflict initially. This resulted in the Alliance appointing Pellaeon as Supreme Commander to appease the Imperials, and also in the Sector Defence Limits being enacted - which were designed to centralise the Alliance military machine. Independent minded worlds resisted these changes, and instead they gave Lumiya the ability to force a continuation of the Second Civil War and manoeuvre her chosen Solo to the throne and birth Darth Caedus...

It’s just an idea. I’m dedicated to making it fit without doing something this apparent but it is fun, either way!

    End Notes.

    1. There was a Han double in DN III: Swarm War which was never reconciled, and we know Thrawn cloned Jaden , Mara, Kam, Kyle and Lumiya. Seemed an easy enough solution.

    2. Bel Iblis, every Senator mentioned in the NJO and bedire, the Viscount, Guardian, Harbinger and a host of other prominent ships all vanished from Legends by Dark Nest. How? Why? Hosnian seems a neat enough reason.

    3. The Remnant did expand in size by 35 ABY in Legends (with no reason for that date), and we did have companies arming the Killiks. It seems an appropriate rhyme and reason.

    4. The Chiss controls of the Killiks are suddenly sabotaged and the EotH smashed within roughly a year of each other, and Dark Journey definitely has Soontir with the Chiss. It has to have occurred before then, but after Jagged returned home, which had to be after the fall of Duro. Has First Order written all over it.

So I noticed that the TLJ VD says that the floor of the Ach-To temple has an ancient mosaic set into it of what the Caretakers call Prime Jedi, the first of the Order.

Unless we get a movie about these Prime Jedi at some point to contradict things am I right in thinking it could work saying that they were the Je'daii?

Alright, I finished Mercy Kill and moved on to Starfighters of Adumar. I think I've got more a personal-canon timeline figured out now. If you'll indulge me:

4 ABY: Battle of Endor. Operation Cinder begins (neo-Battlefront II). Luke is given command of the Rapid Reaction Taskforce (though he takes occasional leaves of absence to go hunt down Jedi artifacts, like uneti tree branches and star compasses), whose first mission is to rescue the world of Bakura from an invasion out of the Unknown Regions.

4-5 ABY: Rogue Squadron, assigned to to either the RRTF or to Home One, play out the events of the Rogue Squadron comic series. The plot plays out mostly the same, but with the the Empire ruled by a duumvirate of Sate Pestage and Mas Amedda. As Pestage/Amedda see their power slip away - first control of the Fleet to Gallius Rax, then Coruscant itself to Ysanne Isard - they both try to make separate peaces with the Alliance/Republic. Neither is successful, and Pestage's failure ultimately proves fatal.

Meanwhile, Han and Chewie liberate Kashyyyk (Aftermath: Life Debt, original Battlefront II). Inferno Squad defects to the Republic and help Luke and Leia liberate Naboo (original Battlefront I, new BFII). Lando takes over New Republic Special Forces. Luke and Lando's commands, with Mandalorian reinforcements under Fenn Shysa (maybe Fenn Rau, we'll see if they ever do anything with the character or Mandalore) defeat Lord Shadowspan in a costly battle at Mindor. Luke Skywalker resigns his commission following the battle, though he would go on to be present at Jakku

5 ABY: Rax concentrates the Imperial fleet at Jakku, where he is defeated in the largest and final battle of the Galactic Civil War proper. Without a throneworld or a fleet, Amedda surrenders what bits of the government he still controls. The Empire proper is dissolved, with worlds either joining the New Republic, becoming independent, or joining post-Imperial states like the Pentastar Alignment, the Cituric Hegemony, or the various warlord realms. Isard continues to hold Coruscant with whatever ships from the ISB or the Coruscant sector fleet remain loyal to her, and the New Republic commits to liberating the traditional galactic capital.

Rogue Squadron, decimated by heavy losses at Mindor, Brentaal, and Jakku, is temporarily decommissioned to in order to receive a ground-up rebuild. Wedge Antilles resists mounting pressure to leave the front lines and run one of the Republic's newly-formed fighter academies, with Janson and Hobbie taking his place instead.

Some survivors of Jakku flee to the Unknown Regions under the command of Rae Sloane, hooking up other assets moved to the UR by the Emperor and Rax. They form the First Order, and attract the attention of both the Chiss and a mysterious Force-user named Snoke. At some point, Thrawn reappears (someone will DEFINITELY tell this story someday, so I'm waiting to see what happens).

    Poe Dameron is born.

6 ABY: The Liberation of Coruscant and the Bacta War, as depicted in the Rogue Squadron novels.

7 ABY: Han Solo leads a task force that hunts down and (apparently) destroys Zsinj, in an effort to prove to Leia (but really himself) that he can contribute to the Republic even when he doesn't have a direct, personal stake in things. Wraith Squadron is formed, proves weirdly effective, and is transferred to Intelligence before they can infect the rest of Starfighter Command.

8 ABY: Han destroys Zsinj for real over Dathomir after he and Leia elope there in the mistaken belief that it was a quiet vacation world. The ensuing fracas ends up involving a Hapan prince, some Force-witches, a whole bunch of rancors, and ABSOLUTELY ZERO Guns of Command.

9 ABY: Thrawn, disturbed by the growing influence of Snoke over the First Order, returns to the known galaxy and organizes the post-Imperial remnants into a new Empire, with Thrawn leading the military and Grand Moff Ardus Kaine of the Pentastar Alignment holding up the political apparatus. Thrawn hoped that by toppling the New Republic, he would have the military and political clout to dispose of Snoke and set himself up as the ruler of a combined Chiss-Imperial state spanning the galaxy. He even recruited an insane Jedi clone to help him confront Snoke on the latter's own terms. It all came crashing to an end at Bilbringi and Wayland. Turns out Ruhk is a super common Noghri name! We'll also say that Leia killed C'baoth, because it was always kinda lame that Mara got to take out Luuke and Joruus.

    Ben Solo is born.

10 -12 ABY: Thrawn's Empire dissolves after his death, and the New Republic continues to mop up its constituent pieces, usually through low-intensity campaigns. The First Order contacts, and assumes covert control over, what's left of the Thrawn's Remnant, though their presence is known only to a few higher-ups and remains a closely-guarded secret. The First Order actually encouraged Remnant worlds to join the Republic in a plot to pack the Senate with senators either directly working for the First Order or unknowingly sympathetic to their cause.

By this point, many of the heroes of the Galactic Civil War and its immediate aftermath have retired or taken jobs away from the front lines. An exception is General Wedge Antilles, who doesn't make an effort to resign his commission until 12 ABY. Before his resignation can go into effect, he is sent on a final mission to the world of Adumar. There, he finally begins a relationship with Iella Wesisri, secures the defection of Imperial Admiral Tetran Rogriss (who knew at least enough about the First Order to be disgusted with the direction he saw the Empire going in), and brought a unified Adumar into the New Republic. The experience convinces Wedge to remain in the military, and he eventually rises to the head of Starfighter Command. He takes a hand-on role in training the next generation of pilots in the coming years, including personally tutoring Snap Wexely and Poe Dameron as they came through the Republic Academy.

13-19 ABY: A period of relative calm in the galaxy. Mon Mothma retires after so-called Black Fleet Crisis, though most of the important policy decisions were made by Leia, acting as Deputy Chief of State for the ailing Mothma.. After Mothma's retirement, the Senate, led by Leia, abolishes the position of Chief-of-State/Chancellor, hoping that the Senate itself could govern the galaxy without a chief executive.

Syal and Myri Antilles are born.

Luke Skywalker wanders the galaxy, studying with other Force-sensitive cultures and collecting Jedi artifacts. He encounters Snoke at some point. He gives some training in the ways of the Force to people he encounters in his travels, likes of Corran Horn, Kam Sosular, Mara Jade, and Kyle Katarn. However, he never organizes them into an order, or even trains them to the point of knighthood.

20-22 ABY: Two Yuuzahn Vong worldships enter the galaxy around Serpindal. Fighting reaches as far as Taris, and that luckless world suffered through an attempted Vongforming. Though the Republic military was able to keep the fighting mostly contained to a few worlds, many of those who fought in the war remained forever scarred by the nightmarish experience of fighting the fanatical Vong and their terrifying biotech.

25-28 ABY: Luke takes Ben Solo and eleven other students into seclusion to start a new Jedi Temple.

The Senate, leaderless, bogs down in a stalemate between the Populist and Centrist factions. Key Centrist leaders covertly work to advance the interests of the First Order.

28 ABY: Leia investigates a crime cartel run by Rinnrivin Di and links them to a militia group called the Amaxine warriors, but never fully makes the connection between the Amaxines and the First Order. In response, the First Order's secret allies in the Senate, led my Carise Sindian, out Leia as the daughter of Darth Vader, ending her political career. Leia responses by destroying Sindian's political career and forming the Resistance from a cadre of personal loyalists and veteran Rebels. Not all of Leia's old friends formally join the Resistance; Wedge, Lando, and others keep their day jobs and use their positions to funnel resources, supplies, and personnel to the Resistance.

29 ABY: Luke confronts Ben Solo about the growing darkness he sees within him. Ben incapacitates Luke, kills most of his students, and flees with those who swore loyalty to him. The present themselves to Snoke as the Knights of Ren.

Leadership of the Centrist faction passes to Senator Drikl Lecersen. After the Senate elects controversial Populist Borsk Fey'lya as First Senator, Lecersen organizes the secession of a large number of Centrist worlds, which publicly join the First Order, revealing its presence to the galaxy for the first time.

30 ABY: Chief of Republic Intelligence (and closeted First Order agent) Borath Maddeus enlists former Wraith Garik "Face" Loran to investigate the General-in-Chief of the Republic Army, Stavin Thaal, for treason on suspicion of being a First Order spy. Face and his reconstituted Wraith squad(s!) discover treachery in both Thaal and Maddeus, showing just how deep the rot within the Republic goes. The Wraiths join Leia's Resistance, though they generally remain too busy in the field to spend much time at Resistance headquarters or with the fleet.

32 ABY: After a skirmish with the First Order in the Mirrin Sector, Poe Dameron and the survivors of his Rapier Squadron join the Resistance. Poe rises to the head of Resistance fighter operations, recruiting and training a talented cadre of pilots.

33 ABY: Poe embarks on a long, strange hunt for Luke Skywalker, hatching the Cosmic Egg and flirting heavily with Agent Terex, formerly of the ISB.

34 ABY: Poe meets Lor San Takka at the village of Tuanul on Jakku and receives a map Takka has constructed, leading towards the first Jedi Temple. Kylo Ren raids the village, setting the events of the Sequel Trilogy in motion.

What do you think? Are there any areas I can tighten up, improve, or cram more cool stuff into?

I quite like the idea of the Lecersen Conspiracy doing what it does with the Centrists. That’s pretty fun.

So, uh, is it wrong, in light of how often the retcons turning him into FREAKING EVERYBODY were mocked, that I'm increasingly coming to think that it actually makes a lot of sense for Cronal to be Snoke?

OK, I picked up the hardcover Crispin 'Han Solo Trilogy' at Barnes & Noble - based entirely on faith that the people on this board, Sinrebirth in particular, will be able to bend the thing into some approximation of 'head canon' in light of the 'Solo' movie. I KNOW the thing is only weeks away - but can we get started on this, based on trailers, etc? At a glance, TWO Lando first meetings and TWO 'Han wins the Falcon' scenes seem to be the biggest obstacles. Little things, like Lando thinking to himself that he ought to grow a mustache, or the idea that Han taught Chewie how to fly, don't bother me - I just brush those off. I've jettisoned basically everything post-ROTJ from the shelf - but I DON'T wanna let Crispin go!

I already suggested that the upcoming Solo film was actually "Han Solo and the Pirates of Kessel" holofilm that Luke found so ridiculous in Shadows of Mindor, and which Han had made money out of.

Basically the new film is an in-universe Star Wars film. It'll be hilarious rereading Shadows of Mindor and thinking of the film any time Han's holofilm is mentioned in the book.

Yes, and that's a fun idea. I'm just saying - in a thread where people are trying to reconcile Jacen, Jaina, Anakin, Ben, AND Ben as Skywalker/ Solo kids - surely we can do the mental gymnastics to make all the Han stuff 'fit.'

I’m calmly waiting for the film, and have Last Shot en route as well. So that’ll be fun.

Thankfully it is set two years after Jakku and thus after Dark and Crimson Empire in my headspace.

Also – just FYI – I actually DO have a few post-ROTJ ‘Legends’ things on my ‘head canon’ shelf: The original Marvel stuff (Nagai/Toff etc.) Truce at Bakura, and Shadows of Mindor.

    Okay.
    Okay!
I can 100% get on board with this. Wow. For the first time I’m actually kind of excited to see it.
