    Now if I could get that damned shot of where Smaug's nostril flares to life I could scale the coins to 3 foot tall Bilbo and make a nice estimate for Smaug's head size and a decent guess at his entire length.

    I'd put Smaug's eyeball at about the size of Bilbo's head.

    PJ's Hobbit cameo revealed. He's the dwarf in the foreground.

    I seriously wouldn't have been able to tell that's him.

    Given that the movies have basically been filmed (and, presumably, the additional footage already shot), I don't think it's possible for AUJ's performance to influence the other two films beyond editing and run time.

    HFR = High Frame Rate = 48fps.

    Although, technically, in 3D, you're only seeing half the frames at any given time (as the alternation between every other frame is what generates the 3D effect) so the motion effect isn't as noticeable.

    I do find it funny picturing him going through the Gap of Rohan... the Rohirrim were probably like "What the hell was that???"

    Despite this movie's success, if I represented the studios involved I'd be pleading with Jackson now for a tighter edit and a shorter run time.

    Saw it on the 31st. Really liked it. I can understand the issues people have with pacing and all the walking but I really like the walking scenes

    Jackson is epic at scenery porn and me and my daughter loved every scenic shot.

    I am not sure you are right on this. I believe that is only with Active Shutter 3D, which not very many theaters use. It requires big cumbersome glasses that actively flicker each eye independently of each other using LCD or something else. Normal 3D differentiates each eye by having the image on the screen for each eye be a slightly different color tone, which is then isolated by the glasses (I think). The 48 FPS is still 48 FPS in this setup.

    I don't think that's entirely correct- the "only seeing half the frames" thing is the reason why most 3D films look so dark.

    Yes, it is mainly the glasses. Although the darkness doesn't seem to happen in IMAX (which may be to do with it using two projectors and generally having higher-quality images).

    I stand corrected! (and disapointed, as I had hoped that 48fps would at least solve that problem... not sure there's a distinct benefit then).
