it is, yes. i would be happy if the design of smaug ended up being close to that though.

 

I agree with the King King breakdown above, some things looked great, a few just too CGI-y.

I'm more interested in the Smaug design than the quality of his CGI as I don't expect any problems with the latter. He's obviously going to get the most attention so I'm sure he'll look good.

One of my fav bits of dragon art from D&D 3.0. This particular thingy is just about 90 to 100 feet nose to tail nose to tail as compared to Smaug's ~ 143.

 

I want Smaug to have machine gun turrets attached to his back and fire lasers out of his eyes and make Godzilla noises.

 

How about we compromise and have a blend of Benedict Cumberbatch and Godzilla noises?

Anyway, hobbits. It's kind of sad we won't see another one, except Bilbo, till the end of the series. I mean in LOTR there are four, obviously, to spend time with in turn. Here all we've got is one busy-fingered Baggins.

 

But we got more Dwarves in the exchange.

 

And Dwarves were definitely short changed in the prior film trilogy. The elves were forever showing up and the race of men got a ton of play too, but I think Gimli was the only living dwarf that we saw in the movies.

EDIT: I stand corrected; there were others at the Council of Elrond.

 

Then again considering the Dwarves actions in this movie were 'run away!' that might be a good thing. I mean Smaug, run away. Orcs at Moria, run away(until Thorin got them to run back). Orcs following them, run away. Golbins chasing them, run away. Wargs chasing them, run away. Wargs and Orcs chasing them, run away. Honestly did Pelleaon teach Dwarven strategy?

 

I guess they just didn't measure up to the other races, huh?

 

Running away was a good tactic in FOTR too. The Hobbits ran from the Nazgûl, and the fellowship ran from the Watcher, the goblins and the Balrog.
