It is with great reluctance that I have decided to not do the midnight showing this year.:(

I know what you mean. I always watch the films, then the appendices.

I think I have probably watched that German interview prank Dom Monaghan pulled on Elijah Wood literally dozens of times.

Too bad the LOTR EE Appendices aren't in Blu Ray,

The fact that I assumed every disc in the box would've been a Blu-Ray. Wasn't the end of the world, but I was mildly infuriated.

    I'm over it now.

No unfortunately, only 2 discs are Blu Ray discs which are the movies while the appendices are dvd discs

Given that the behind-the-scenes features weren't filmed in HD ('cause, you know, c. 1999-2003 handheld cameras), it would've been pretty useless to put them on Blu-ray.

The Hobbit II took a dive at RT overnight. It was 80% last time I looked, now it's 72% with

best headline: "the transformation of Jackson’s Middle Earth into alt-Tolkien fan fiction is complete."

There's a hilarious typo on RT saying that the film is rated PG13 for "extended sequences of intense family action violence and frightening images".

    Edit: Forgot to bold word.

    I saw it yesterday.
    Some very vague spoilers:
    Bombur is the man.
Smaug is everything Bilbo said he was, best dragon I have ever seen with an enormous ego. I think all his monologues from the book are in.
    Thorin's majestic wheelbarrow.
I now want a film of any battle in Silmarillion because I just want to see thousands of elves going through an army of orcs like a combine harvester. Hopefully the Battle of Five Armies gives me more of that.

That's typical MPAA rating language. It's probably not a mistake.

Strangely that makes me want to see it even more.

I think I'm at a point where I know an adaptation of The Hobbit is never going to match LotR, so I'm just going to indulge in whatever wild ideas PJ wants to run with. When I first heard we were going to get three movies I was critical, because I knew it was going to be a bloated hot mess. But you know what, I'll take a bloated hot mess that at least TRIES to do something new with the material over a "safe" but predictable version any day. I read a comment the other day that the intro scene of Thranduil was like a porno movie and I was like YES CAN'T WAIT. This is going to be a movie that I simultaneously love and love to hate. It's going to be glorious.

Oh, maybe. I'm just used to the awkward language they use.

Well I was going to make a joke about the company being on the run from the Manson family hence the rating, but then I realized how stupid that would sound, even for me.

    Got back from the midnight:

Enjoyable but it didn't blow me away. It's a more mature/consistent film than the first (nothing as bad as the trolls or Goblin King from the first one) and while it has more epic action, it's very much an odd beast- it's both less of a standalone and more transitory than the first while simultaneously feeling like it has far less filler.

These movies continue to be better at enhancing the Lord of the Rings trilogy (assuming a chronological viewing) than being separate films. But I have a feeling they'll be much better served from marathon viewing once the trilogy is completed and can be taken as a whole (with perhaps a little bit of Quest Qut re-editing... ;) ).

Still, everything with the spiders, Gandalf, Elves and Legolas was pretty good- the Laketown, not so much. The showdown with the dragon is thankfully more extended than one might have thought and has a few great little moments in it.

The HFR wasn't noticeable at all this time around- but I did see it in a different theater than I did the first Hobbit, so it might be chalked up to differing 3D/HFR projection system qualities.

Regardless, I didn't notice any sequences with an overt Soap Opera effect or the normal speed-then-high speed-then normal speed "video game" motion discrepancies that were particularly bad in the Goblin tunnels of the first film. On the flipside, the nature scenes here didn't seem to have any of the enhanced visual effect the HFR gave the first film either.

I'm debating whether or not to see this in theaters again, but if I do I'll strive to see it at a different theater to compare the HFR effect more directly.
