Amph One Thread To Rule Them All: The Rings of Power + The Hobbit & Lord of the Rings Trilogies

It is with great reluctance that I have decided to not do the midnight showing this year.

 

Why?

 

I know what you mean. I always watch the films, then the appendices.

 

I think I have probably watched that German interview prank Dom Monaghan pulled on Elijah Wood literally dozens of times.

 

Too bad the LOTR EE Appendices aren't in Blu Ray,

 

I must admit...that irritated me more than it probably should have.

 

What irritated you?

 

The fact that I assumed every disc in the box would've been a Blu-Ray. Wasn't the end of the world, but I was mildly infuriated.


I'm over it now.

 

No unfortunately, only 2 discs are Blu Ray discs which are the movies while the appendices are dvd discs

Given that the behind-the-scenes features weren't filmed in HD ('cause, you know, c. 1999-2003 handheld cameras), it would've been pretty useless to put them on Blu-ray.

 

The Hobbit II took a dive at RT overnight. It was 80% last time I looked, now it's 72% with

best headline: "the transformation of Jackson’s Middle Earth into alt-Tolkien fan fiction is complete."

 

There's a hilarious typo on RT saying that the film is rated PG13 for "extended sequences of intense family action violence and frightening images".

Smaug is everything Bilbo said he was, best dragon I have ever seen with an enormous ego. I think all his monologues from the book are in.
Thorin's majestic wheelbarrow.
I now want a film of any battle in Silmarillion because I just want to see thousands of elves going through an army of orcs like a combine harvester. Hopefully the Battle of Five Armies gives me more of that.

 

I screened it last night too. It was pretty good.

 

That's typical MPAA rating language. It's probably not a mistake.

 

Oh I thought it was meant to say "fantasy".

 

Strangely that makes me want to see it even more.

I think I'm at a point where I know an adaptation of The Hobbit is never going to match LotR, so I'm just going to indulge in whatever wild ideas PJ wants to run with. When I first heard we were going to get three movies I was critical, because I knew it was going to be a bloated hot mess. But you know what, I'll take a bloated hot mess that at least TRIES to do something new with the material over a "safe" but predictable version any day. I read a comment the other day that the intro scene of Thranduil was like a porno movie and I was like YES CAN'T WAIT. This is going to be a movie that I simultaneously love and love to hate. It's going to be glorious.

 

Oh, maybe. I'm just used to the awkward language they use.

 

Well I was going to make a joke about the company being on the run from the Manson family hence the rating, but then I realized how stupid that would sound, even for me.
