Sauron's 'more personal involvement' refers to his larger dynamic within the plot. Not whatever you are implying.

I like how Cumberbatch is the only one wearing a suit in that photo [face_laugh]

You know, while I prefer the new visual design for Smuag, I have to admit I think Richard Boone did a better Smuag voice than Benedict Cumberbatch. While not bad, the latter does come across as a bit "generically evil sounding", whereas I liked the casual boredom mixed with hints of frustration and intrigue in Boone's performance. Felt like what such a proud creature should sound like when talking with a bold "lesser" being.

From that interview from Boyens, it sounds like we'll be seeing Thrain in the Extended Edition of Desolation of Smaug, that should be interesting

Just saw this movie last night and it was amazing! Cumberbatch did a fanastic job as the voice of Smaug!
The best was just as the final scene was fading out, a girl sitting in the row behind me said (and loud enough for the whole theatre to hear), "they're NOT ending it like this....if they end this one like this I'm gonna be so pissed!" This of course prompted a round of laughs from everybody.
Just when Peter Jackson has you fully engrossed in what is going on, he leaves you longing for more. It was so brilliantly done. I mean we've all read the book and know what's going to happen, but to see it come to life on the big screen like that....just no words to describe the awesomeness!

One thing I didn't realize was that Legolas is much older than Gimli.

Saw it last night. Good, but not as good as AUJ.

When Bard appeared in the movie, I was reminded of something established in the LOTR appendixes, so forgive me for running a rabbit here. Bard disliked the Dwarves in the film (not sure if he did in the book; I need to read it again), but the dislike apparently did not extend to his descendents. Also, when Sauron finally unleashed his forces during the War, it was not just the South, but the North, including Erebor and Dale, that were under attack and something (I felt) that could have been at least mentioned in the LOTR films.

The following is from Appendix A, Section III, Durin's Folk:

"So it was that when the War came at last the main assault was turned southwards; yet even so with his far stretched right hand Sauron might have done great evil in the North, if King Dain and King Brand had not stood in his path. Even as Gandalf saids afterwards to Frodo and Gimli, when they dwelt together for a time in Minas Tirith.

'Now we hear that Dain has fallen, fighting in Dale again, even while we fought here. I should call that a heavy loss, if it was not a wonder rather that in his great age he could still wield his axe as mightily as they say that he did, standing over the body of King Brand before the gate of Erebor until the darkness fell.

    ....

do not forget the battles in Dale and the valor of Durin's Folk. Think of what might have been.

    ...

victory here only to ruin and ash.

    ...

averted ... because I met Thorin Oakenshield one evening on the edge of spring in Bree.'

And how old is Legolas compared to Gimli?
