Was Saruman already corrupted in the Hobbit? His downfall is a bit similar to Dooku.

Looks like Figwit/BRIT is sitting next to Aragorn. I'm not sure, though.

If I remember correctly, Tolkien can be sketchy at best in some passages of The Hobbit, and it isn't so far-fetched to imagine that an Elf woman would stand among the "bunch of Elves" Tolkien mentioned (to put it in prosaic terms). Also, Elf women in the Sil were awesomely badass (just look at Galadriel a.k.a. Nerwen "man-maiden", not to mention Haleth on the Man side of things), so it isn't too much of a stretch to think that at least some Elf women in the Third Age would follow the warrior path. Granted, they might be more of an exception, but the idea isn't implausible...

    Cheers,
    Lauré :)

$80? I'll give you the poster if you can erase this awful film from my head.

On another note, can anybody explain why Radaghast leading the orcs away meant him leading them away....and then back to the company?

I really think 2 movies, 5-6 hours will be the best for the Hobbit+some extra plots like the necromancer.

Havac I'm interested in your opinion here.

Do you think PJ could've gotten it down to one movie? Initially, I thought they could and thought even two movies was too much. But after having seen the first one, which was bloated, overlong and to some extent pointless, I kind of understood how it would have been two movies, and would have preferred that to 1 or 3.

Could? Absolutely. I can understand two, with the added coverage of Dol Guldur, but one movie was possible if Jackson was to show some discipline.

IMO, it wouldn't have worked as one movie, even though the book was short, there was too much information to leave out so I'm glad there are 3 films instead of 1

I hope there's a romantic subplot involving Smaug, Sauron, and Gollum.

I rereading The Hobbit atm... first time in what seems forever. I've gotten about halfway through and I'd say Jackson's biggest problem was not necessarily adding more to the book, but adding every single minor detail. He certainly didn't do that in the LOTR's -- I remember reading those after the films came out and was shocked how much he changed/omitted from the novels.

If he had decided to give The Hobbit the same treatment, he could have easily fit the novel into one movie. But following everything scene-by-scene as he's doing, on top of adding additional scenes to tie it in with the other LOTRs, I can see how this has grown into 3 films.

So basically you're hoping for a threesome between Benedict Cumberbatch and Andy Serkis? :p

Yes. Benedict does have the sexiest voice in Hollywood besides George Takei.

George Takei could always voice Sauron.
"A Halfling has the One Ring? Oh myyyyy."

I honestly have no idea where I'm going with any of this.

One three-hour movie would have covered the material from the book. I could have sympathized with two two-hour movies. But three 2.5 hour movies is absurd. That path leads to bunny sleds and laughable run-ins with ringwraiths.

I think two films would have been good.
The old cartoon just left out so much that was important...

My thoughts exactly. As I'm reading through it I'm trying to figure out how he's going to make a *succinct* third film (assuming Smaug gets the ax in the second), and I can't see it without a ridiculous amount of extra stuff added in. I mean it might be cool (I'll admit that rumored Galadriel battle sounds kickass), but it means he dragged out the first (and maybe second) films just to have one final film dedicated to a lengthy epic battle.

Longer film means possibly more Thranduil. I'm pleased. :)
