    Yay-yay-yippee! My first win!

    Ahem. Now for my entry...

Zahn uses Mara Jade as a proxy to slam everything Luke has done in every book since Zahn's last trilogy, and has Luke actually agree with her for no apparent reason; then she blows up her ship and he proposes to her.

Zahn gives up on character development and just has his character dictate to Luke how he should act.

There is a diplomatic crisis that is resolved without galactic war thanks to Leia, Lando, Karrde, and Pellaeon; Luke and Mara learn about a whole new galactic faction and a whole new threat out in the Unknown Regions (and have the weirdest instant romance ever) that sets up the potential for awesome future stories; the Empire is defeated through reform and peace rather than war; and there are SOONTIR FELS EVERYWHERE -- what's not to love?

So this is how the Galactic Civil War ends, on the heels of a long buried Imperial era atrocity that has been disinterred and the possible return of a Grand Admiral who was believed to be dead for a decade.

Thrawn's back, but Zahn's the only one who cares.

If you're reading chronologically, a great place to stop reading.

Palpatines and his Empire were all part of Thrawns master plan whatever that was, while Mara is the coolest bestest person ever in the history of ever, and every other bantam author besides Stackpole sucked.

Luke proves he's still a rash farmboy at heart, Mara proves she's not a deranged psychopath who goes along with the voice of Palps in her head, and Thrawn continues to prove that he's the biggest B.A. in the 'verse (even if many people don't know it).

The end of the old era and the beginning of a new one - you know, the one where one author sets up certain ideas for where new stories and characters can be created, only to be flatly ignored when someone else takes over? That new era.

Although the title implies that the future will be wonderful, in reality it just gets exponentially crappier and crappier.

The happy ending the heroes of Yavin deserve after all their hard work as the Galactic Civil War ends not with a bang but with a whimper.

While everyone freaks the **** out over a 40-year-old piece of paper, Luke and Mara find a full copy of the document while Garm exposes the Fake Thrawn with his sheer tactical brilliance, thus ending the conflict and by extension the Galactic Civil War.

Someone actually trying to summarize the book in the One Sentence or Less thread? What kind of witchcraft is this?!

No, Mara, you're supposed to summarize the book, not my leadership of the thread. :p

Nah, at 520 pages, it's lightweight by SF/fantasy standards!
